When Roadfood.com forum moderator Mike Shell hit town, we decided to sample a few New Haven BEST EATS. It started with Orangeside Donuts (which now is at 25 Temple Street) and the maple-frosted nut-crusted beauty pictured above. Later, we went for an Italian Bomb at Modern Apizza:

I've always contended that crust is the foremost virtue of New Haven pizza, and I do like the chewy, charred crust turned out by Modern's 700 degree oven, but in this case, it was the toppings that starred. Even if they did tend to sog out the crust, they were a celestial combo: pepperoni, sausage, bacon, garlic, onions, mushrooms, and peppers:

We then went to Ashley's for great ice cream (Oreo pictured here) and the best bittersweet hot fudge sauce on planet earth:

Did I mention that between New Haven stops, we headed northeast for a steamer at K LaMay's:

...and long dogs with mustard and hot relish at Doogie's:

Love it!! I just introduced a Dallas friend to Modern last week. I forget sometimes how fortunate we are to live in the land of so many great Roadfood options.
