With a half hour to kill while a saddle was adjusted at Hartford's glorious Smith-Worthington Saddlery (in the trade since George Washington was President), I moseyed to Farmington Avenue looking for lunch. Tangiers International, a market that bills its inventory as "specialty foods for all people," was just right. At the back of the store, which is mostly Middle Eastern groceries, a short counter offers dine-in accommodations and a view of the cook. When I ordered falafel, he used an ice cream scoop to retrieve four moist spheres from of a container and tossed them into boiling oil, assembling the rest of the sandwich as they cooked: lettuce, tomato, and tahini sauce on a broad flatbread. Talk about fresh! The chickpea balls were light, crisp, verdant, and abuzz with spice. Now I must return for hummus, curry, tabouli salad, and some divine-looking pastries. With Turkish coffee, of course. 668 Farmington AVe., West Hartford, CT. 860-233-8168
