Bordens
This is it, here in Lafayette, LA, the last survivor of a chain of ice cream shops once run by the now defunct Borden's company (the brand name, and mascot Elsie, is still in use by various companies around the country).  Borden's Ice Cream of Lafayette (see the Roadfood.com review) is now a spiffy, locally owned ice cream parlor where you can enjoy classic sundaes, cones, and sodas or, as we recently did, a chocolate malt and a root beer float:
Malt and Float
Our soda jerk put so much ice cream in our float, she offered to add more root beer as we got low!

I've been there twice, once before the renovation and once after. The inside is really big now and does indeed look spiffy, but I preferred the old fashioned charm of how it used to be. They do make really good sundaes and shakes.

It was owned for a couple of decades by the University of Louisiana - the original owner willed it to them when she died in 1981. Gotta figure there was no reason for them to put money into it. Then they sold it to a local in 2009, which is when it was renovated, I assume.
