We hadn't planned on another visit to the Billy Goat during this Chicago visit, but we were just above the pub touring the Tribune Tower as part of Open House Chicago (highly recommended!), which offers, one weekend each year, free behind-the-scenes architectural tours of dozens of buildings around the city, many of which are not ordinarily open to the public. It's sponsored by the Chicago Architecture Foundation.

Anyway, when the tour let out, the chilly rain came down, and we were with Sue's brother, who'd never before been to the Windy City. The Goat seemed like a natural (see the review). Sure, it's touristy, and once is probably enough, but the cheeseburgers, with Billy Goat beer, aren't bad at all.

It's always nighttime at the Billy Goat:

Was the Billy Goat a one-time visit for you, Bruce (other than with friends)? I don't think that I'd go again on my own, what with all the other places to visit. I can check it off my list, but that's it.

Yeah, it falls into that unique category of restaurants: glad to have been there, unlikely to return on my own, but will occasionally show up with newbies. I think if they didn't lay the SNL schtick on so thickly I'd find it worth repeated visits for its old-man-bar vibe.

It earns bonus points from me for being a Mike Royko hangout.
