Gene & Jude's (see the Roadfood.com review) is located on River Road, in the town of River Grove (IL). Guess what? They're near a river, the Des Plaines River to be precise. And that river sometimes floods, as it is doing right now, resulting in Gene & Jude's closure. They're saying on their Facebook page that they will remain closed through the weekend, at least. Gene & Jude's was last closed due to flooding about five years ago. And it'll probably happen again on some future date. Thankfully, for them and for us, it's only temporary.

I've recently discovered a Hot Dog Joint of equal or even greater status than Gene & Jude's. Rand Red Hots in Des Plaines, about 15 minutes north of G&J's, just west of the same River Road, opened up last fall and they've been putting out a fantastic product ever since. There's a strong temptation to compare them to G&J's because they have the same limited menu, and serve their Dogs and Polish in much the same way: Fresh Cut fries wrapped up with the sandwich. The differences are both subtle and significant. First off, RRH's fries come out consistently more crispy and well cooked than G&J's. Also, there's plenty of ketchup for the fries and no dirty looks for daring to ask for it. The Dogs and Polish are all Vienna Beef products, served steamed or grilled, with a natural casing. We did a Contingent tour of Des Plaines back in February with RRH as one of our stops. The entire group (about 20 people) was thrilled with the food. As for my own selfish needs, RRH is a lot closer to home than G&J's, and for my money, a better product. Buddy P.S. And their further away from the river, and on higher ground, so less likely to flood. B.

Good comments, I have been saying for years G&J's is way, way overrated...but it carries this cult following that is hard to understand. RRH serves a great product, with Vienna Beef being there main stay. There probably is 100's of hot dog places in the Chicagoland area that are much, much better than G&J's. Hopefully, the flooding problem gets better for them.

Buddy, would you put your post into a user review for the site so everyone could access it? That would be so very helpful, as it's a really poignant review!

I hate to use this route to communicate, but am I the only one who can't access the Forums for the last 12 hours or more? I would have sent a PM to a mod, but again, because I can't get to the Forums, I can't get to the PM's or Membership List. If I'm alone in this problem, could someone please contact me at my regular email address, buddyroadhouse@homail.com. Thanks, Buddy

I have been a Gene & Judes fan for 30 years, even though I thought the fries were a little greasy and the place was getting a little... shabby. But it was a great stop for lunch or after a few adult beverages, However... this new place in Des Plaines, Rand Red Hots is my new favorite spots for a dog & fries, and they provide ketchup unlike the ketchup Nazis at G&Js. It is sparkling clean, the fries are fresh cut and cooked in clean grease. You aren;t limited to soda as a drink option. Shakes, malts and even iced tea are avaiable as well as ice cream... nothing like a good Black Cow root beer float. Rand Red Hots takes the best of G&J (Vienna Dogs) and added all the things that make a drive-in worth the drive. Plus... the prices are right. This is a once a week stop for me!!
