Buffalo Sweet Shops

Famous for chicken wings and, among connoisseurs, beef on weck, Buffalo also happens to be a confectionery city of the highest order. Family-run sweet shops, large and small, temper cocoa butter, whip up marshmallow sauce from scratch and create unique signature candies. In the capital of what local chocolatier Dean Tassy refers to as The Sponge Belt (Syracuse to Erie), sponge candy is only one chocolate grail among such pieces de resistance as cashew-crowded Charlie Chaplin logs, creamy-crunchy stolen havens, molasses pops, nut barks and non pareils. Nearly all of the city's destination candy stores also host ice cream parlors that serve the most aristocratic sundaes, which western New Yorkers know as frappes.

Parkside Candy - Buffalo , NY
Built in 1927, Parkside Candy of Buffalo is one of the prettiest ice cream parlors anywhere. Walk into this place and your nose fills with a liquorish cocoa butter aroma. Wooden tables and chairs allow customers to contemplate the fine gastronomic artistry of their creamsicle frappes, root beer floats, and maple nut sundaes.
Mike's Candy Shop - Buffalo , NY
Charlie Chaplins wrap chocolate, coconut, and cashews around a soft marshmallow filling. At Mike's, the marshmallow is homemade, with a texture poised between solid and flowing. The spectacular marshmallow filling is key to this Charlie Chaplin. Sponge candy is at its best here. The chocolate scent is fairly intoxicating.
Alethea's - Williamsville , NY
Buffalo's top chocolatier, Alethea's also has a great ice cream parlor with a wide array of homemade toppings, freshly-whipped cream, and crisp nuts to top sundaes.
Condrell's Candies & Ice Cream - Buffalo , NY
The sundaes are among the best we've had. They use Perry's ice cream, a very good regional brand, but what stands out are the top-quality homemade toppings, and their sundae-construction imagination. Whipped cream is thick and luxurious. Impeccably fresh nuts are toasted and salted. Try the warm French chocolate sauce.
Antoinette's Sweets - Depew , NY
Antoinette's Sweets is one of Buffalo's premier candy shops and ice cream parlors -- a sweet tooth's dream.
