Portland, Oregon Coffee An'

Probably because it is the home of Starbuck's, Seattle gets credit as the Northwest's great coffee city. It is great, no doubt about that, but so is Portland, Oregon; and in our experience, the cupcakes, donuts and other pastries in the City of Roses are without peer. Not to mention hot chocolate of the gods. Here are a handful of our favorite stops in Portland, Oregon, for coffee an'.

Saint Cupcake Galore
Voodoo Doughnut
Sahagún
Crema
Ristretto Roasters
Saint Cupcake Galore - Portland , OR
Yes, this is cupcake heaven. Available in normal size or as half-size dots, these circular lovelies are homey more than fancy; each of the ones we have tasted has made us exclaim that it is the Platonic ideal of its flavor, as the frosting – cream cheese on red velvet, for instance – is nothing short of perfection.
Voodoo Doughnut - Portland , OR
The pastry we recommend the most is a bacon-maple bar. It is a substantial buttermilk long john frosted with maple glaze and festooned with strips of bacon that somehow, magically, retains a welcome crunch. What a great all-in-one breakfast.
Sahagún - Portland , OR
Attention, chocolate lovers! If it is possible for eating to induce full body-and-soul rapture, here is the place. What Elizabeth Montes makes is insanely delicious, not to mention just plain beautiful. Her hot chocolate is thick, dense, and supremely satisfying, sweet but not cloying, the soothing and exciting essence of pure chocolate.
Crema - Portland , OR
We very much enjoyed the sweet things we ate – especially a serving of chocolate bread pudding with bananas! – but were even more smitten by a cheddar corn biscuit. It's a fairly squat circle that is all crusty and chewy with baked cheese and dotted with sweet corn kernels. We also liked the looks of other savory breakfast pastries that included eggs, cheese, and veggies, and intend to give them a whirl next visit.
Ristretto Roasters - Portland , OR
We thought the espresso a perfect balance of caffeinated punch and smooth, chocolaty flavor; the regular coffee had a good kick, too, but wasn't so strong that a second and third cup didn't seem like great ideas.
