To me if goes beyond bread, cheese and perhaps a pickle or a slice of tomato it is no longer a grilled cheese. It is a grilled (something) and cheese. A totally different sandwich.

Homemade, keepin' it simple — Vermont cheddar and smoked gouda on multi-grain bread with Montreal steak seasoning sprinkled on just before turning.

I totally agree with fishtaco and FriedClamFanatic about what a grilled cheese sandwich should be.
And special thanks to Keysey42 for a picture of a great looking grilled cheeser I would be proud to serve and, would love to eat.

The Grilled Cheese Sandwich sampler plate at El Chorro Lodge in Paradise Valley AZ (not the Roadfood place El Chorro in Tucson).  I don't remember the combinations but there was Walnut bread, blue cheese and Brie, among others.

By the time the group got to Camp Washington, our third chili stop of the day, we were ready to supplement our chili intake with other menu items.  It was this open minded attitude that led me to the discovery of the wonderfulness of a well prepared hunk of goetta.

I was sitting with Big_g when he and Boyd shared that sandwich.  I went ahead and ordered an extra plate of onion rings.  Based on the looks of rapture on their faces, my biggest mistake of the day might be my failure to order an extra one of those grilled cheese-bacon-tomato sandwiches.

Yep, grilled American cheese with tomato (bacon is optional) is a must for my grilled cheeser. With a good "Kosher" dill pickle on the side.
I guess I'm just an old fashioned guy.

    Foodbme,
Dec. 2012. I just searched on the web and there was a site with menus that showed it, but the menu on their own web site did not have it.

The place changed hands recently so maybe the new owners dropped it.

Call me a heathen, but I had a very tasty "designer" grilled cheese recently at the American Grilled Cheese Kitchen in SF near the ballpark.  It's the "Mushroom Gruyere" with fontina, gruyere, roasted wild mushrooms, roasted potatoes, melted leeks, caramelized onions, thyme butter on levain.  I can't promise that all those ingredients were actually on the sandwich, but it was quite delicious.

There is a place in Somers Point where you can just about anything on your grilled cheese.  I did not have a grilled cheese, I had the shrimp po boy which was very good.

I enjoy what most people these days are calling grilled cheese sandwiches. They were always called toasted cheese sandwiches where I grew up. But after careful consideration of the Urban Spoon presented sandwiches I'll pass.

I, too, grew up with the term toasted cheese. And for me, its simple-either just cheese, cheese and tomato, or cheese tomato and bacon.

There are Grilled Cheese Sandwiches and there are Grilled Sandwiches with cheese. When you talk about comfort food a grilled cheese sandwich would be on the list. Start using different breads and better cheese, it will change the way you look at Grilled cheese sands. We all grew up with Kraft singles and wonder bread. Shred your own cheese and have a better tasting sandwich. If you melt the cheese on the bread this way it cooks faster.

We never even had Wonder Bread in our house growing up.....Mom made great toasted cheese with colby and a bit of mustard. I loved the way the cheese stretched when eating it!

Serious Eats take on the Perfect Grilled Cheese Sandwiches.
I'm gonna try the Chili Dog Grilled Cheese. Maybe add some onion!

Grilled Cheese and homemade Chicken soup was the menu last week one night as we struggled with the crud outdoors.

I love that double grilling idea!  Will try it next time, especially if I add my homemade bacon and a tomato slice.

A side note, I have often repeated, more than likely on here.  About 20+ years ago we were in St. Kitts with our then young kids. For lunch we stop in a lovely hole in the wall place in the town. I had a Grilled Cheese and Lobster sandwich with a side of French fries.  It was DIVINE!.  Imagine my surprise when the bill came and the potatoes (imported by necessity) were more expensive than the sandwich (Lobster local, cheese??)

When I lived in the U.S. Virgin Islands A glass of a very, very, very good cognac cost a quarter. If you got it the way the locals did, with Coke (honest, that was the common drink) it cost $2.50. A Jack Daniels and soda cost $2.50. The Jack alone was a quarter.

I like a cognac with a splash of Coke on occasion. Cherry Coke is a better match though.

Grilled cheese though, I go for Cabot's Seriously Sharp cheddar (they used to call it Cabot Hunter's Seriously Sharp, not sure why they changed it) on white or potato bread, a squirt of either regular or jalapeno mustard, and tomato.
