10th Annual Jersey Hot Dog Tour - Sept 21th , 2013 - past trip reports

Hello all ,

Extended my trip by a few days and have a lot of emails to go through and  pms here and on phones .
For those that have been on a waiting list I will let you know this week whether there is room  on the bus .
Any returnees that did not notify me by Aug 1st will be put at the end of the waiting list , as it is not fair for  the ones that have been waiting .
Excellent intinerary once again by John !!!

I was really hoping to get on the tour this year, but I guess as luck would have it, I didn't make the cut.

Hey everybody!  I'm hoping to catch a ride with someone who is driving up to the bus in Harriman and possibly driving back to the city.  I sold my car years ago before I moved here.  The NJ Transit schedule shows the earliest train arriving in Harriman about 30 minutes after we're all supposed to meet and there are only a couple of trains going back at night.  I'd need to catch the 6:34pm train from Harriman back to the city if I do take the train back.

I'll gladly chip in for gas/tolls and maybe some sweet baked goods to boot!  Might anyone from the city (Manhattan) be attending or passing through the city on their way to/from the tour?  Thanks!

Billy, it would probably be easier to get a train from NYC to NJ.  Have you looked into NJ TRansit to Kenilworth area?

Do you know on what line/branch the Kenilworth stop is located?

Some trips can be completed by transferring at either Secaucus or Hoboken. For most trips, the higher Secaucus fare is presented because there are significantly greater transfer and travel options available.

One-way and round-trip tickets may be purchased on board your train. However, if the ticket office is open or a Ticket Vending Machine (TVM) is available, there will be a $5.00 surcharge per person including children (except senior/disabled tickets).

You should take a NJ Transit bus to Union , NJ from the Port Authority...
that bus will take you into the center of town...
from there you can either take a cab to the Galloping Hill Inn, or bribe a Roadfooder with some of your homemade brownies !!!  I'm confident someone will be glad to pick you up there on Morris Ave, and drive you the few miles or so to the 1st hot dog stop in the 5 Points section of town..

I don't take the bus nor am I familiar with their schedules, but I'm sure that they stop on Salem Rd. which is one of the corners that the Galloping Hill Inn is located on. Not to mention the street that I live on about 1 1/2 miles down the street from the GHI and 11 houses in from Morris Ave. I'll e-mail you my phone #. Call me when you get off the bus and I'll come and get you.

John, is GHI right at the intersection where Galloping Hill Road, Slaem Road and Chestnut intersect by Union Hospital?  If so, I can take the Raritan Valley Line train to Roselle Park and meet up with the gang at GHI @ 12noon.

Would anyone be going by a train, NYC subway station or into the city at the end of the tour?  The bus does go back to the Harriman train stop at the end, but there is about a 3 hour wait for the next train after the bus gets there.  Thanks.

Billyboy: As a 10+ year commuter on that line I'm very familiar with it. I think you've picked out the best way for you to get to the GHI. It's only about a 10-15 minute walk from the Roselle Park Station. Going home you should do the same thing in reverse (unless of course you can get a ride to the station from someone). It would make no sense to go to Harriman, that's going 50 miles out of your way to the north.
 
A couple things I should point out: The Raritan Valley line starts at Newark Penn Station, so you'd have to get there from Manhattan. I think I recall from some of your posts that you live in lower Manhattan. So the best way to get to Newark Penn would be the Path train from WTC to Newark.
 
At Newark you would change to the Raritan Valley line, which is USUALLY on Track 5, but check the boards to be sure. If time permits you should buy your tickets before getting on the train, either from the vending machines on the platform or the ticket counters in the main waiting room. There's a $5 surcharge if you buy them on the train. Since it's the weekend you should buy a round trip excursion ticket which is about a 25% discount.  
And don't forget that the Raritan Valley line runs only about once an hour on weekends so you'll need to time it pretty well both going and returning.

And if you just feel like going non-stop from NYC,  then take the bus to Union...   it's only a few miles or so from Morris /Stuyvesant Ave intersection to the GHI...

I understand that not everyone likes bus travel, though...

Hope everyone is ready for the 6th Annual Jersey Hot Dog Tour .
There will be our Hudson Valley pick up at 1000 AM at the Metro North Commuter Train Lot in Harriman that we always meet at .
From there the 55 passenger motorcoach with lavatory and video screens will make its way to Galloping Hill Inn for the start of the tour .
Bus should arrive at GHI by 1130 and we will depart there at high Noon .
Anyone need directions to Harriman pick up just let me know

I can't wait. One adjustment however. The Garage will not be open by the 26th. I felt that this was a possibility despite assurances that they would be open in August. I originally planned on 6 stops but added a seventh in the event of a possible cancellation. So we're set. I've spoken to the owners of the 6 places we will be going to and they're all ready. They will be notified when we will be on our way so that they will be prepared when we arrive. Hopefully the weather will be good. See you all then.

Just want to double check:  we're meeting up at Galloping Hill Inn at 11:30am as our first hot dog stop of the day and then departing from there at or around 12noon?  An earlier post said the GHI meet-up was at 12noon.

We will gather at the GHI between 11:00 and 11:30. We will leave for our first stop at noon or shortly after.
