Jim's right, the mustard museum is in Wisconsin. But I did stumble across it by accident, by simply driving around, and keeping my eyes and ears open.

Hey Pogo, I hope you aren't feeling a personal responsibility to make everything work out perfect for our group's upcoming adventure. After all the idea for this trip came from outside Nashville.

If we make a wrong turn that day, we just make a wrong turn. Most of those places are so close together, it can't be much of a problem.

A scouting trip might even diminish the anticipation and sense of adventure you'd enjoy with the rest of us on the Big Day. Something to think about.

I just want you to remind you that you're not on the hook in any way for our experience. And I'd like you to know we don't expect you to do any more than you've already graciously committed to doing.

If you do head out to scout it all, I wish you a very fine and safe day.

I just got off the phone with Poverty and he seems like a very nice fellow with all kinds of interest. He is a avid hiker and has hiked most of England and has a desire to do the Pacific mirrow of the Appalachian Trail.

He indicated there is a possibility for him and Pogo to do a dry run this weekend. As JimInKy indicated, no pressure but if you do it, please tell us about it.

The idea of doing Monell's and Beacon light and a bunch of BBQ joins in a day and a half is really exciting to me.

Sorry, but his mealy-mouthed (no pun intended) replies have gotten a bit stale.

Poverty: We ain't the most organized group cause we ain't sure where we are going, what we want and what we will do when we get there, but for sure we will enjoy the trips. Sure do enjoy and appreciate the efforts of JimInKy, Pogo and yourself.

Ort, how comes the cruise control? I'm really hoping you make it here for the BBQ tour. (btw, can you bring me a package of Hollifield's Mo-Peppa?)

Pete,
It's looking slightly on the dubious side right now, but things can always change. Do not give up on me: I am not giving up; not A-tall.
Let me see if I can find where the people who cleaned up the carport put the ice chest I was saving for transport of such as that sausage. Without it, we'll have to rely on cool weather, and that's not always a safe thing to do with perishables, especially pork.
I'll check back often before saying nay or yay. Do not give up on me until I give up myself, and that's not likely.
Que-Curious, Ort. in 30601.

Paul, If I were in Knoxville today, I'd give thou a warm pat on the back for conceiving this wonderful idea. It's given me something special to look forward to during these cold weeks, and it's leading Poverty to sing. Pogo is having great fun testing the food we'll eat and Lisa has gleefully Lost-Her-Mind, though we aren't saying that (it's A Barbecue Pilgrimage).

Did you notice the Beacon Light serves gravy with their pan fried chicken and homemade biscuits? I thought of you when I read that.

That's exactly what my mother said on the phone last night, "You're going WHERE?" Tennessee Mom. "To do WHAT?" Eat BBQ Mom. "With WHOM?" Um, a bunch of Roadfood people. "HAVE YOU LOST YOUR MIND?" Maybe Mom but I haven't lost my appetite!

I'm glad Poverty like to hike, we'll need some after this food extravaganza.

Radnor Lake is in Nashville. It has several fine trails, but I've never gone at night. If anybody wants a little exercise Saturday, though, I think we'll be near Mousetail Landing. It's one of Tennessee's fabulous state parks. Maybe we'll take some q there for a pic-a-nic.

Dearfolk,
So the Beacon Light's in Lyles, huh? Gracious sakes, that isn't more than a whoop and a holler from where you turn off to go to Primm Springs, the smallest town in Tennessee with a post office (38476, I think it is - and, folks, that's just about all that IS there! [There are three houses and a trailer, last time I ventured there.]). They run a rural route out of that office that requires a carrier in a four-wheel-drive vehicle ten hours to finish it in GOOD weather!
Not far from Lyles is Bon Aqua, an old resort place similar to the function of Primm Springs in years past, when city folk ventured there to "take the waters."
Also nearby is Wrigley, a flyspeck place which is somehow connected both to baseball and the Wrigley family of chewing gum fame, hence its name.
And, in Centerville, there used to be a bakery that made the most h-e-a-v-e-n-l-y fried pies you ever tasted. If it's still in business, everyone will have to stock up. The coconut are especially memorable.
As for my participation in this BBQ extravaganza, tomorrow is supposed to be rain-free, so I'll get some errands done. After I get to the bank, I'll have enough money touchable to have whatever's ailing Blanch The Cadillac seen to, plus plenty to travel on.
At this moment, with warmer weather forecast for next week, it's looking more like I may be able to make it. I've cut it close on plans more than once before. Do not give up on me. It sure would do me a world of good to get out of 30601-land for a weekend of eating with some of my oh-so-patient correspondents!
I'm also looking forward to that brewpub in Nashville that somebody mentioned.
Anticipatorially, Ort. Carlton in 30601-Central.

The Beacon Light isn't really "in" Lyles. Lyles is merely the nearest post office, about four miles down the road. We're not giving up, Ort. If you show, we'll not only get to Blackstone, I'll take you to Bosco's for their famous Flaming Stone ales. Their website is boscosbeer.com.

Pete -- I was thinking in terms of maybe stopping off at Pinson Mounds for picnicing and mild hiking activity. It's a bit closer to where we will be (it's not far from Henderson) and has some really cool Indian Mounds). It's a short hike to the top of Monk's Mound, but worth it IMHO. We could probably hit Mousetail on the way back, time permitting. Natchez Trace State Park is also very nearby, just off the interstate a few miles this side of the Lexington/Parker's Crossroads area. I'll try to reach you tonight re: lunch tomorrow. I'm thinking Jim's right about not doing a dry run. I'll just try and bring specific distances and see if we can't map out an agreeable itinerary.

Poverty, Pogo, JimInKY, Mayor, lleechef and Ort: Six days and we will meeting at Monells. Really looking forward to the meeting. I went back and reviewed the website originally posted and re-read the interviews. Pogo, that is your home base and I know that you know thee folks and we will look forward to your guidance.

Some of those folks are really good. It seems that all use hickory wood supplied by a local sawmill. I guess the trick will be trying to catch them with fresh que. I notice that some reheat it and some you can get it fresh off the smoker. I am not good enough to know what is the best but it seems to me that I would prefer fresh off the smoker. Some do not seem to emphasize sides. In my opinion sides improve the que.

Poverty likes to hike but I am not sure that after the trip, I will be up to that. I admire his style.

Please keep us informed of your meeting tomorrow. I have extreme interest.

Yes, we met at Judge Bean's, and snacked on a few Diablos. A diablo is a fresh jalapeno, seeded, filled with a jumbo shrimp, (one of my all-time favorite oxymorons) jack cheese, wrapped in bacon, and cooked in the smoker.
We managed to pare it down to about eight places, and built in a good deal of flexibility. We may not get to all eight, depending on how the day goes. Two things I can assure you all of, is that we're going to be driving through some beautiful country, and we're going to have some great food. We agreed on a couple of must-do's, several likely's, and one or two possibilities. We wanted to leave some time between our last bbq stop and the Beacon Light, and if the weather's nice, we'll have a chance to walk off the day's overindulgences.

Just so that everybody is on the same page. We're meeting for dinner Friday evening around 5:45, give or take, after which we'll bomb on over to Blackstone. Saturday morning, we'll meet at the eye-forty motel parking lot. Go west on I-40 to exit 172. Turn right (north), and the motel will be on the right about a half mile from the freeway. I think 8:00 a.m. will be a good target time. I'll probably get there a little early for a country ham biscuit, but that's just me!
