Sundancer,
Remember that Assumption is a Parish in Louisiana. It's next to Ascension (sp.?), and near St. John The Baptist, for whatever it's worth. - Regardless of the Parish (their name for a county unit) names, the food down there can range up to the mighty good from the far-more-than-edible at rock bottom.
The glee club idea sounds terrific. Maybe we should get some t-shirts printed that say "I survived...."
Hopefully Attending, Ort. Carlton in 30601-land.

Just found this site and had to make my first post in this thread. Native Texan here but my nephew married a Chester County gal so we go to TN a couple of times a year. Intoduced to Joyner’s Jacks Creek
Bar B.Q. by my nephew's father-in-law who declares it the best around.
Got introduced to TN pulled pork at Joyner’s & have tried others but it's my standard. Hoping to spend a week in Jackson, TN this summer & appreciate all the suggestions.

Not to disparage your newfound kin, but he's dead wrong. Joyner's operates on the site of what used to be the best barbecue around those parts (Crow & Sons). For many years that was where we always got our barbecue. Alas, that site now cooks with gas rather than wood (we stopped going there several years ago). I much prefer the barbecue just up the road at Bobby's, which still does it right...for a long time over wood coals...

Pogo and Poverty: Have you decided which ones we will be visiting?

I am on a partially starvation diet trying to make sure I have room for a sample of each place you local experts have picked.

As most things, the anticipation is probably better than the real event, but I will assure all that I enjoy anticipation. I enjoy thinking about where we will be visiting. Once I know, I will check the sites and enjoy thinking about it.

lleechef, you have been quite, but I assume you are still on the program. The Mayor and Janet is on target and Ort is still trying to get his cruise to cruising. Sundacer, Poverty, JimInKy and Sundancer are on target.

To heck with Atkins for the Sundancer this coming weekend, I am gonna blow it big time. Wish Bushie was coming.

OK, We need some prep work done for the day's circuit ride. Can one of you familiar with the best sequence of events do a list of the establishments that best meets the circuit rider concept... then run some maps to help those of us not familiar with the backroads of Middle Tennessee with the navigation. This being Monday, we really need to have this stuff available by Thursday. Even a list of locations---in sequence will help. If I have time after getting that info i can do my own map search.

Beloved Friends,
Blanch will not be ready in time for the trip. I will not be able to come, and on that account only. Right now, it is impossible for me to rent a car and join you, or I would do it that way.
Please, please - if any of you do something like this again, and I know you will, somewhere in the realm of my geographical ability to partake, do not forget me. I will have dependable transportation eventually (if not sooner), and will be able to join you - if indeed y'all don't decide to mosey down to Georgia first, and, in effect, join me! Hey, Athens/Atlanta are prime Roadfooding territory!
Nothing will please me more than reading the account(s) of this sojourn to Tennessee's real woodburners. On the next similar venture, I will be more aptly prepared to join you.
I bow out this time with the greatest of reluctance. Enjoy yourselves; I'll lose some more weight and join you the next go round.
Ruefully (I Have Many French Streets?), Ort. Carlton in Well-Roaded, Well-Fooded Athens, Georgia.
P. S. When I do manage to make connections with y'all, I'll bring plenty of livermush and Hollifield's Mo-Peppa Sausage... plus some other goodies available around these parts. Numerous culinary surprises will await you....

Pogo made a list and a map. I'm not sure how to get it on here, but if anybody wants to see it, give me a fax number, and I'll get it right to you.
Ort, sorry you can't join us this time. We'll do it again, maybe closer to your territory next time.

I have been on and off the phone with Alaska Airlines and on and off their website. Problem is this: only one way out and one way in to AK. Everyone has a TON of flyer miles and everyone wants to use them NOW. In the winter. So I'm still waiting for confirmation from AK Airlines. Sorry, gentlemen, I'll have to let you know tomorrow. Last time we flew they would only let us fly on Saturdays. Good for Palm Springs. BAD for Tennessee BBQ. I'll keep you posted and my fingers crossed.

Thanks for the thought, Mr. Sundance. Man, I wish I was coming, too. This is my idea of a perfect roadtrip; traveling the backroads and stopping at the little places you're going to visit.

And traveling with this group would make it even better. Sorry Ort won't be there with y'all.

I'll be thinking of the West TN Barbecue and Glee Club, enviously, this weekend. Y'all have fun!!

Lleechef -- Sending major mojo your way. A path will open...

Ort -- Sorry you can't make it. We'll definitely get something together in the future down your way.

All -- I will send out an email tonight with files attached: one will be the itinerary write-up, the other will be the map for Saturday. Can any of you NOT access MSWord documents?

Revised weather report. It looks like rain Friday evening. Saturday is looking pretty good, hopefully in the high 40's at least, and the rain over with.

Thanks, Poverty, for arranging dry weather for Saturday. It'll be much nicer if we don't have to run around in rain all day.

Wouldn't you know it? I have my first day of long hours for the season tomorrow. I'm going to go in early, and try to knock it all out, but there's a chance I may be late or a no-show for dinner. If I can't get there, I'll meet you guys at Blackstone afterwards.

Gentlemen, and (we hope) Lady-
We will be at the eye-40 Motel at the 172 milepost at 0800 or before on Saturday morning. The camera is ready and a clean pad in the travel Log.
To be on time our departure in Hoosierland will take place shortly after 0400--depending on the weather. If that isn't devotion to a cause, I don't know what is.
For those watching for the reports to flow in....this thread should be good for some interesting reading on Sunday.

Aw, thanks Mr. and Mrs. Mayor and give McDuff a big kiss on the noggin for me. AK Airlines is still giving me the run-around, hey, but it's only mid-afternoon here so things could change. Why the need for a bib? So I don't drool? Looks like an awesome Q trip.......I'm gonna fight tooth and nail to get a seat on a plane tomorrow! Grrrrrrr.

Well, we are officially underway. I just got back from Monell's where I had dinner with Poverty Pete, JiminKY, Sundancer, Al the Mayor, and a special surprise guest, the unexpected Bushie!! Apparently The Mayor has a very long reach indeed as he was able to twist Bushie's arm from several states away. Had a great time and definitely enjoyed meeting guys for the first time and getting reacquainted with those who I've met before. Dinner went well (I'll primarily leave it to others to comment on the food as I've already written about Monell's recently -- though I will say that the chicken was not as good tonight as it was at lunch the other day, while the catfish was superb), we chatted some with a cute couple visiting from Tuscaloosa (with whom Sundancer engaged in some good-natured banter in honor of the annual UT-Bama skirmish on the 3rd Saturday of October), and sat in abject, goggle-eyed, slack-jawed wonder at Jim's ability to charm the ladies (we are not worthy). Afterwards we wandered over to the Mad Platter (two doors down) for a couple of libations, libashuns or liberations (depending on how many you've had). We're off to an excellent start and tomorrow cannot get here soon enough (though my stomach could probably use some time to prepare). The only down side is that neither Lleechef or Ort could make it. Here's hoping that they can next time!!
