How about the W C Handy Blues and BBQ Festival, Henderson KY early in June?

Al, I believe you have written about that before? As I recall, you had a pretty good time. Is there a website?

Or, the Handy festival would be awesome, too.

Y'all plan it, and I'll tag along.

Paul, Here is the link to the upcoming Festival in Henderson KY. Henderson is directly across the river from Evansville, Indiana and just 30 minutes from Owensboro, KY--the Home of my favorite BBQ "The Moonlite"

Sounds good to me, although I think the festival is actually in October. Heck, if we can get a group together for that, I'll even be willing to run the 5K race they have as part of the festivities...

So...June in Henderson, October in Cadiz? Let's do it! I have friends in Evansville I need to visit, anyway. Perhaps Saturday at the festival, then Sunday lunch in Owensboro?

Sundancer is in!!!!

I have read "The Mayors" post regarding the festival. I have read about his favorite BBQ joint and I have got to do it.

Maybe Bushie will show up again.

I am so happy that HAYS SMOKEHOUSE in Lexington TN has been discovered & recommended. Judy Hays was my best friend in high school (LHS class of 1970), so I have been good friends with the Hays for years. We ALWAYS eat there when we visit Lexington. They even shipped us some BBQ when we lived in San Francisco. We live in Memphis now. Memphis thinks it has good BBQ. They don't have a clue here. It has to be smoked whole hog, PULLED WHITE meat, without that thick sauce (which is used to cover up that so-so chopped meat). The Hays and the girls there are "Good People" and the BBQ is supreme. The sauce is great too (Judy's secret recipe). You must try it! Yum!

Bushie---just checked my schedule---gonna have to make it to the Ham Festival instead of the Handy---our non profit is doing a fundraiser golf tournemment that week and i am on the committe for that, plus we have a big "Junteenth" gig. Checked out the Ham Festival though and that looks GREAT good music and country ham AND fall colors!!!! Was thinking about the drive there from here in Oklahoma through all that beautiful Mtn road foliage and didnt take much to talk my wife into it!! We will take the camper and make a week long trip of it!! Promise--i will be there! Still hope to get to the Handyfest one of these yrs!!! Really looking forward to meeting this crew in the flesh!!! and after seeing the pics you guys posted and knowing what i look like-they better cook up a heck of lot ham when we all pull into town!If we all walked into an AYCE at once,it could strike fear in the heart of the bravest restaraunteur!

I didn't even think of the fall colors! One more great reason to go. The Ham Festival is a definite, then. See you there.

Good idea Pogo---start them up and i will subscribe.Really wish i could make it to both but then that how life goes---this group that im working with really a good cause--we wrok alot of "Blues in the School" programs and are hoping to expand it considerably with opening the museum and hall of fame to the kids and bringing them in foe camps.DC and Selby are really good with kids--especially really young ones and "at risk" kids--and its a heck of lot mellower then working in clubs and bars now that DC is in his late 60,s. Forty years on the road was enough!---kiust thpought of someting-=--i get to plan a road trip to GET to the Ham fest too!!hmmmm---how many meals between Oklahoma and the Ham Fest

Well, we finally got over to Lexington, TN. for lunch at Hay's Smoke House. I have honestly got to say, it is some of the very best bar-b-que I have ever put into my mouth. So juicy and tender and done to perfection. The lunch rib plate was only $6.25 and we could not eat all on our plate and ended up taking half of it home. We will definitely add that place to our regular list of places to eat. Dynomite !!!!

Hey, glad you made it there, Pappy! I agree with your statement, "...is some of the very best bar-b-que I have ever put into my mouth." I thought the same thing. They are great people, too.

Pappy: I drove about 300 miles out of my way last week just to have lunch at Hays Smokehouse. I totally agree with your statement. I hope you had the opportunity to visit their smokehouse which is a piece of art and and a olafactory experience within itself. Mr. and Mrs Hays are real folks also.

You should know that I LIVE in Lexington, TN, and I am completely ashamed to have never been to Hays BBQ. I did visit Scott's BBQ yesterday and was completely disappointed. I don't have a taste for the vinegar slaw and the bbq sauce was not sweet, either.

Nevertheless, you have all sold me on going to Hays today for lunch!! I am sure it will be as good as you say it is, too. Then, I will come back after I have eaten and provide you all with, yet, another review.... and will rub it in your faces that I don't have to drive 300 miles out of my way to go for great bbq!!! <evil grin>

Blessings!

Can some member of the Glee club look at his Hays BBQ cap, and post the phone number? I need to talk to Dennis. I'm going to have him cater my company picnic in a few weeks, but lost his number. He's going to cook and serve us a whole hog at the Nashville Speedway. Can't wait!
