I bought the book. It's a pretty good read.

And the winner of the title "Worst Food in America" is... Outback Steakhouse Aussie Cheese Fries with Ranch Dressing, weighing in at 2900 calories! On second consideration, I wonder whether the 2900 calorie figure included the whole sides of bacon bits and ranch dressing?

On second consideration, I wonder whether the 2900 calorie figure included the whole sides of bacon bits and ranch dressing? Yes. But even without the bacon bits and ranch dressing, this likely clocks in around 2400-2500 calories and 140-150 g of fat. That means, even split between 4 people, each person is getting upwards of 600 calories and 35 g of fat - before they even get their entree! Restaurant nutritionals horrify me. I don't understand how they can pack so many cals and fat into 90% of their offerings. Although much of it has to do with the gargantuan portion sizes that are now "standard." If I were to make these dishes at home, there's no WAY they'd be that much of a diet-killer!

The short answer is that people want and enjoy such meals! Wanting to fit through doorways, I tend to avoid mega-calorie food, for the most part.

Here is my favorite: "It takes a special talent to turn a single oversized onion into the fat equivalent of 67 slices of bacon, but the line cooks at Chili's manage this horrific feat with the help of a thick batter, a calorie-loaded dipping sauce, and a vat of bubbling fat." (2. Worst Starter) Mmmm. Bacon......

Prior to a recent menu change, Ruby Tuesday had a burger that weighed in with 141g of fat and nearly 2000 calories which would have blown Carl's Jr out of the water. There was a pasta dish on their menu with a similar fat/calorie content that surely would have made the list as well.

Great post, thanks for the info. I even signed up for the "FREE WEEKLY EAT THIS, NOT THAT! NEWSLETTER!" For the record, I never had any of the Top 20. But I probably ate worse.

I once heard the executive chef of the Weis supermarket chain give a presentation on preparing healthy versions of popular entrees served in restaurants. He handed out recipes comparing some dishes. He was asked why restaurants make such unhealthy dishes. He simply said that food high in fats and calories tastes good, and insures continued patronage of the restaurant. Here I thought it was the skill of the chef and those secret family recipes handed down through the generations. Baloney. The restaurants make these dishes with ingredients I wouldn't think of combining myself because I know it is not healthy to eat so much fat, sodium and calories.

Anyone else notice in this article how the purposely make the food look extra crappy? half eaten sandwiches, things out of their packaging, etc. Trust me you should know if you're eating fries with cheese, bacon, and a creamy dipping sauce that it's not good for you. Let us eat in peace! Be fat and jolly like santa
