2008 Albany, New York Hot Dog Tour

Gus's Hot Dogs
Hot Dog Charlies
Famous Lunch

Optional:
Helmbolds meat packing

Some of us proposed a date of October 4th, 2008, please chime in if this is still good for everyone.

The proposed establishments are very easy to find but it would be great to have a local guide, anyone interested?

Matt

Well, the Troy Pork Store is out because it went out of business a few months ago. Seems like this tour needs some reformatting and very soon.

Wish I could join you fellow Hot Dog lovers !
Oct. 4th is the date that I fly out west ......
a week in L.A., followed by a week in Vegas...
(lots of burgers & beef ribs planned) (and probably a few hot dogs, as well!)
(and of course, those Vegas buffets!)

I've been to Gus' once, and I just love those tiny little hot dogs!

Have fun, guys!

I'm still in for 10/4. I think Waltipi is a native there but now lives someplace n Massachusetts - maybe he'd volunteer to guide us - he asked about this tour recently.
I think with a minimum of confusion we can work out some car pools to save some gas and expense.

We had originally thought to start in Kingston, but I think we'd be better off to go directly to Troy and do all of our eating there, and if anyone from the lower/mid Hudson Valley is still hungry they can grab a hot dog on the way home in Kingston.

To get the ball rolling let's say we meet at Gus's at noon on 10/4...

Cheers, John

I thought that we were meeting at noon at Gus's.

Here are some general directions:
From Exit 23 of the NYS Thruway or I90, Get on I-787 N
Take the 23RD STREET exit, EXIT 8, toward WATERVLIET/GREEN ISLAND.
Turn LEFT onto 23RD ST.
Turn RIGHT onto 2ND AVE/NY-32.
Turn LEFT onto 25TH ST.

I hope that this helps.

If I have room in my tummy, I also plan stops at Jacks for a hamburger. and The South End Tavern for a Half and Half.

Thanks for the directions Walt. I think you saved a lot of people roaming around Troy looking for Gus's as it is in Watervliet,,,close, but not the same place at all. Here is a map I found on the web:
http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&ie=UTF-8&um=1&cid=0,0,8679186526728964544&fb=1&dq=Gus%27s+hot+dogs+Troy+NY&daddr=212+25th+St,+Watervliet,+NY+12189&geocode=11019571837539767974,42.735310,-73.701520&sa=X&oi=local_result&resnum=1&ct=directions-to

Although I am somewhat local, I am just as much in the dark as the folk traveling from afar. I will need directions and maps. I will not be able to guide you. I also have scheduling conflicts, but am eliminating them as best I can, as meeting up with good folk from Roadfood has a priority with me.

The entire thing seems ill planned and impromptu, but this is why it is attracting me. Serendipity happens and that can be a beautiful thing, The season here is changing rapidly and as one travels up the Hudson Valley at this time of year Autumn is beginning to paint the valley with its first vestiges of color. Full color foliage is weeks away, but I tend to enjoy the very first Autumnal awaking's best. This alone may make the tour worthwhile.

Don't know what is going to happen with this yet...but let's talk and plan.

Waltpiii,
As per Seafarer John we are meeting at Gus's at 12:00pm. The directions you provided to Gus's are correct. Everyone keep in mind that Gus's is on a residential street so parking is limited. There are a few seats inside however most of the business is done at the take out window. I have only been there once and recall one or two picnic tables.

Hot Dog Charlies is in Cohoes, NY, about two miles north from Gus's on the right at 618 Saratoga St. This place has indoor seating.

We can all discuss our route to Famous Lunch during the meet. Famous Lunch is in the city of Troy, 111 Congress St.

Also discuss venturing to Helmbolds Meat Packing, they are open on Saturday from 9am - 2pm.

I hate to make a simple meet-up seem complicated, but if Hembold's closes at 2pm maybe we should start there and proceed to the other places frm there...

If no one agrees then it's 12 noon at Gus' in Watervliet on 10/4/08.

Brooklyn Bill is traveling at the moment so I'm not sure if he's comng. If he cant come with us we'll have room for 2 more n our car...

leaving from New Paltz at about 10:30 am .

Cheers, John

Hello all ,

A meet or tour is never simple Seafarer , take it from me .
At the time of the Jersey Hot Dog Tour this meet was still up in the air so I agreed to work OT next Sat .
We are looking at another Coney Island Meet in Middletown , probably end of Oct or Nov. and we would love to do another Charlies Pool Room getogether before the winter weather set in .
Good luck with the meet and hope to see you all soon

Looking forward to meeting at Gus' in Watervliet at 12 noon 10/4 with some Roadfood friends.

I'll be going solo, Gail just had a wisdom tooth extracted and Brooklyn Bill and Ginny are unable to attend.

My count leaves about 7 of us. If anyone else wants to join up, this is a totally informal unorganized meet-up that will be easy because all the places we want to visit are within only about a five mile circle of each other.

Cheers, John

Seafarer John, his wife Gail, Chis , Denise (my wife) and I
went to Gus's, Hot Dog Charlies, the Famous Lunch. We had dogs at all places. Chris tried the sausage at Gus's and the fish fry at Charlies. We then went to Jack's on the Wynantskill/Troy line and had Hamburgers with fried onions. My brother Bill met us at Gus's and Jacks.

Denise and I had a great time with good fellowship and good road food.

We had a very pleasant afternoon with our friends from the Connecticut tour, Walt, Denise and Chris. Gus' was a bit of a disappointment to me - the sauce was heavy, dry and dull - the hot dogs were fine and I really liked the rough ambience of that ancient place. We sat outside at a picnic table and watched a really lively business going on , so obviously they are popular with the locals. Next stop was Charlies, a venerable institution, but in a new location with comfortable indoor seating and a very friendly staff - it's like third generation running the business. The sauce was much better here, the hot dog was OK - it was not local - it was Sabretts. I was especially taken with the sweet tomatoey (sp?) sauce offered with Chris' piece of very nicely fried "scrod". Next was Famous Lunch where the sauce was excellent - spicy, nicely textured, and a pleasing color. The dog was Hembold's - the local standard - a pork and beef dog with German/American spices. Famous was also doing a brisk business - enough to keep three counter people hopping. Last but not least we stopped at Walt's favorite place, Jacks. We had little cheeseburgers on little buns ( just right size after all the hot dogs) and washed it down with well made milkshakes.
BTW: the standard drink at the joints in Troy is chocolate milk to wash down the hot dogs - at least that's what our native guide, Walt, told us. I tried it at Famous and it works surprisingly well.

Walt and Chris took photos and I'm sure they'll be posted here soon.

Cheers, John

Friends, I've posted my reporthere on RFDigest, and hopefully Waltpiii will post some of his photos, too. Thanks again to Walt for the use of his group photo -- and to John for the Jonamacs, which will find their way into a dumpling soon! Looking forward to seeing you all again real soon, Chris

P.S. Famous Lunch was my favorite dog of the day, but I gotta say that the sausage sandwich at Gus's was my favorite item overall!

We learned that Famous Lunch gained the "Famous" part of its name when a Troy native US Marine guard at the US Emabassy in Moscow ordered a few hundred of their hot dogs for a party at the Embassy sometime in the 1960s. The national press
gave the story wide play and the place became "Famous". And , the record for eating those little dogs is 39 in 30 minutes - not to be compared to the gross happenings on Coney Island each year...

Thank, Chris, for posting the photos and the fine report.

Cheers, John
