The "delightfully tacky" part suggests to me it's a hoax--unless Hooter's now has more ability to smile at itself than I'd have ever suspected.

"Delightfully tacky yet unrefined" has been Hooters slogan for years, it's on their menus, t-shirts, and publicity releases. And yes, it's true, Hooters has signed for the space which was formerly the deli.

Looks like a hoax... Although last time I was in NYC I not only saw a Subway (sandwich shop, that is), but I saw locals getting food there! Once Disney moves into town, it's all over...

It was a "tease" on a local newsradio station - nothing official other than that though. I'm in the midst of calling around to a couple of buddies who work for NYC to see if I can get an actual confirmation.

It seems that this location would be unlikely for Hooters. It's absolutely not a touristy area, and the one Hooters that does exist in Manhattan is always empty and is a huge money loser for the chain. Of course it's totally wishful thinking. All of Manhattan is turning into a mall as it is. St. Mark's place is now littered with Gaps and Chipotles; There's Olive Gardens and Outbacks in residential hoods; Home Depots are opening everywhere. the only welcome "malling" is the opeing of all the Whole Foods and the upcoming Trader Joe's. Grocery shopping in Manhattan has been a nightmare of shriveled produce and outdated meats for too long.

I hope this is indeed a hoax. Unfortunately, Hooters has taken over my favorite place to stay in Las Vegas. The old San Remo H & C was a very good location at the south end of the strip. It was actually closer to the gaming area of the MGM than most of their own rooms. It wasn't very big which appealed to me. I guess all of that is still true, but being operated by Hooters, I don't think I'll be back there.

There was one in Boston it is closed now I belive. I think the NHL strike did them in. I don't think it would be a big draw in NYC just a flash in the pan. Chow Jim

In keeping with the memory of the place, I'm sure one patron is bound to opine, "Well, that ain't chopped liver." The Bear

Grocery shopping in Manhattan has been a nightmare of shriveled produce and outdated meats for too long. But that area has over the past 10 years become a real playground for NYU students...and they are opening that huge dorm down off 2nd Avenue, not too far away. The local Dallas BBQ place up around University Place does a great business, essentially offering similar kinds of food. I'll bet, if indeed this is true(and I have my doubts; apparently the sign was posted outside the glass door, as opposed to inside, so anyone with a decent printer could have put that up) that the restaurant chain would be thrilled to have some of that college business...it's its bread and butter, anyway. Pigiron, I used to live in the neighborhood around that Hooters on W. 56th..it always looked crowded to me..filled with plenty of young guys recently graduated from college, working in banks, law firms, etc.

It seems that there's a new NYU dorm going up on every corner. They just tore down a whole block of buildings on 23rd and 3rd for a new dorm. I lost my only decent produce store in the process. On a positive note, the humongous dorm that replaced the old Palladium on 14th street is going to house NYC's first Trader Joe's. quote:The local Dallas BBQ place up around University Place does a great business There's also a BBQ on St. Marks and 2nd Avenue, in the building that my wife's father was born in. I imagine that neigborhood has completely changes 5 different times since the late 1930's. quote:Pigiron, I used to live in the neighborhood around that Hooters on W. 56th..it always looked crowded to me..filled with plenty of young guys recently graduated from college, working in banks, law firms, etc. I read somewhere that it was the least profitable location inthe entire chain. Isn't that such a weird location?

Pigiron: You'd be surprised at the number of tourists that would pass by there. Lots of other "theme" restaurants are within a few block radius (Jeckyll and Hyde, Harley-Davidson, etc.). Many big offices in the area, too, so like I said, you'd get the after work, scarf- down -chicken- wings- and- pound- beers younger male crowd. I wonder if the profitability issue is affected by the outrageous rent the organization must pay for that space?

I am thinking they'll open in another location, but who knows.

I don't think they'll open in another locaton. I think they will settle with the landlord and re-open. I'm gonna stroll by there after work on this unbelievably gorgeous March day, and see if they've emptied the place out. Stay tuned.
