ellen4641 thanks for sharing, Michael... Looks like I better step it up a bit, as I've only been to 4 places on your list ! (#1, 5, 12, and 15) but I'll probably be adding #3, RF O'Sullivan's, by Monday night! You been to Salina, Ellen?? cool...

Yeah, I've been to Salina, Lou ... It was during one of my cross country driving stints when I moved back east from LA. I did'nt feel that Cozy Inn place was anything special, just okay.. (but I'm willing to give it another try) I felt that way about the WHITE HUT in Springfield, Mass.. (it's not on these lists, but has been mentioned by Jane and Michael.... there is even a Roadfood newspaper clipping on the White Hut wall ...) While I loved the grilled onions at the White Hut, both me and my Roadfood.com dining companion , rpalmer were underwhelmed by the burgers. He had remembered them being better tasting... they were slider style , but I found the meat a little tough; not juicy!

Hi Ellen - I agree with your comments on the White Hut. I expected much more, and came away very underwhelmed by the experience. They do a booth at the "Big E" - Eastern States Exposition, also - tried them again and felt the same. Now - Number 7 on the list - Harry's Place - IMHO one of the best burgers in CT. Also have hit 5, 12, and will be putting number 10 on my list for this summer!

The White Hut is what it is. Suggest a better option in the category within miles and I'll be happy to explore it. By "the category" I mean lunch counter, quick service, etc. Surely, you are not suggesting I go to the McDonald's across the street.

I was in Salina, KS and stopped for gas. I knew nothing about this town having one of the best burgers in the country! Shame on me! Opportunity lost. The longest ride of my life..across Kansas.

I need to get out more. Thank you, Michael for posting that list. Ellen, Howard's is a flat grill burger. Flavor from the meat and not from the char. We'll stop for a burger on the way to the ribs!

So far just Philips Grocery, Hodad's, Burgerville, and Conway's Red Top. my local favorites in the Portland area are Stanich's, the Helvetia Tavern, and the Castagna Cafe.

There's many great burger places being listed on this thread, but I'm a bit surprised that no one's mentioned Redamak's in New Buffalo, Michigan. I had dinner there yesterday, and while I don't consider it one of the all-time great hamburgers, it's definitely an above-average burger worthy of attention from roadfooders. They grind their meat on the premises, and turn out a very tasty burger ( average diameter, but a half-inch thick. ) Good fries too. Redamak's is on US 12, not far from Michigan City IN, and is closed from November through February.

500 things to eat before u die. WOW it list the Pine Club in Dayton Ohio as a place to eat a burger. I never get past the steaks. Guess I will need to make a trip just for the burger now. Wonder if i can talk my wife into a 3 burger run. Pine Club, then on to Crabill's, then up to Lima for Kewpee.

Can you take 2 pics, and lift the bun off the roll on the second pic?!?! I'd love to see the meat! (on the side where there is no cheese) Show me the meat, baby!

I just did one in the Boston area, in Cambridge , MA You can always tell your wife that she can just have an iced tea, she does'nt have to try and keep up with you!Let's hope your wife is an understanding Roadfood spouse!

It's ground from their steak trimmings. They frown on it in the summer, since it's so perishable. We get it, after promising to make it into patties and freeze it as soon as we get home, no matter how tired we are. It makes an awesome grilled hamburger. Never had one on site, but I would expect it to be wonderful.

nocarolina- Redamak's is listed in the George Motz's "Hamburger America" book. It looks like a real Roadfood kind of place.

Ellen, your wish is my command. I had lunch today at Paradise Pup, a hot dog stand in Des Plaines IL that was enthusiastically recommended to me by Buddy Roadhouse. The Pup has all the typical Windy City goodies ( Chicago-style dogs, Italian beef, etc. ), but they are locally famous for their one-third pound charcoal-broiled burgers.

I got my hamburger on the Bavarian bread instead of a bun, and it's garnished with mustard, ketchup, pickle and raw onion. A great burger and good fries too. As you requested, Ellen, here it is covered....

I commend the list compiler for making an effort to be "regionally appropriate," [cue wanderingjew!] but I don't agree with the choice of the El Rey de las Fritas chain as making the best frita (think: Cuban slider) in town. My choice would be Fritas Domino El Original at 936 SW 67th Avenue. It's a real dive, but they have some kind of machine that makes really fine potato threads for frying that go on the fritas, instead of the more common shoe-string potatos (sometimes from a can!).
