Located in Union about halfway between the Galloping Hill Inn and Manny's Texas Weiners is Lutz Pork Store. Their German style beef and pork hot dog was named Reserve Grand Champion by the American Association of Meat Processors by participating in the Annual American Cured Meat Chamionship held in Cincinnati July 26, 2008. I was happy that a place near me had gained national attention with their fine franks.
http://germanvalleyfoods.com/id15.html I went and picked up some since it had been about 2 years since I've eaten one of their franks. They are very tender, juicy, and fresh. Mild, but not bland; very typical of a quality German butcher frank. Lutz's has been in business almost 50 years and is known for their other fine meats and sausages.
I spoke with some of the guys working there about our Tour and was told to speak with the owner who was not present at the time. I think Lutz Pork Store would make an excellent stop for those of you looking to pick up some fresh German franks and sausages. I suggest bringing a small cooler so that you can stock up. Franks are sold loose and in packages. Other sausages such as bratwurst are also sold loose. You can buy as little as 1. There is also good German and Polish sauerkraut and a selection of mustards.
I finally spoke with the owner who said that if we can arrive about 1:30, he will provide some samples for us. It's a small store and they don't sell hot dogs that are prepared to eat like a hot dog joint, but that he would have something for us. I think it would be good to see an authentic German butcher shop, sample some of what they have, and be able to purchase some fresh dogs and sausages if we want. These kind of places are slowly disappearing.
We will start at the Galloping Hill Inn as mentioned, then head to Dees Truck. Depending on the time, we will either head to Lutz's, or go to Manny's or the Windmill first.
