Only time one would call 911 for pizza around here is when it makes you sick..

Woman jailed for repeatedly calling 911 because she wanted pizza
      By The Associated Press
(5/24/05 - CHARLOTTE, NC) — An 86-year-old woman has been sent to jail after police said she called 911 dispatchers 20 times in a little more than a half-hour to complain about a pizza parlor. Dorothy Densmore remained in jail Tuesday charged with misusing the 911 system, a jail spokeswoman said.

She told dispatchers Sunday that a local pizza shop refused to deliver a pie to her south Charlotte apartment, said Officer Mandy Giannini, a Charlotte-Mecklenburg police spokeswoman. She also complained that someone at the shop called her a "crazy old coot," Giannini said.

Densmore wanted them arrested. Instead, police came to arrest her, and she resisted, Giannini said.

It's unusual for someone to face charges for nonemergency calls, Giannini said. But on Sunday, Densmore kept calling 911, even after she was told to stop, Giannini said.

When an officer arrived at her apartment, the 5-foot-tall, 98-pound woman attacked him, Giannini said. Densmore scratched him, kicked and bit his hand, she said.

Densmore is also charged with resisting a public officer and two counts of misusing the 911 system, jail records show.

It was the second time she'd been charged with misusing the emergency system, court records show.

In March 2004, police said she called 911 about 10 times after she was asked to stop, a police report says. She then threatened to hit the officer with a chair when he came to arrest her, the report states.

I live 40 miles north of Charlotte, and this was a local story on our news. One detail that Yahoo failed to include was that Mrs. Densmore wasn't trying to order an entire pizza, she only wanted a SLICEof pizze, and she wanted it delivered. Had she ordered an entire pie, there wouldn't have been a problem, LOL.

Oh for goodness sake. The woman obviously has real mental health issues, why aren't they being properly addressed instead of locking her up ?

Maybe for the same reason they cuffed that 5-year old having a temper tantrum in her FL school and dragged her off to the police station: the law makes it almost impossible to deal with these things in any sensible way. In the case of the kid, nobody but the police were allowed to physically restrain her from trashing the classroom and principal's office. In the case of this woman, unless she is a danger to herself or others, in which case they could hospitalize her, they probably can't stop her from doing this other than by putting her in jail where her phone access is limited.

I work two jobs, both of which involve dealing with older people, many of whom have varying degrees of mental health issues. There are a lot of social/healthcare options between letting someone do what they will regardless of the consequences to other and locking them up in jail or hospitalising because they are a " danger to themselves ". If this is the second time this lady has been taken to court over this kind of thing it really seems as though her problems are not being addressed correctly. Because no matter how much I am for the rights of the individual and people taking responsibility for themselves, someone who repeatedly abuses the emergency services in this way is in need of appropriate help.

I signed up for the "do not call" lists, both state and national, and since then I haven't had a problem. Of course now I hardly ever get a phone call but . . . .

BT nailed it. Without being a threat (real threat, not just a nuisance) to herself or others, the police cannot institute a mental hygiene arrest and have her committed for 24 hours for psychiatric observation.

After two times of annoying 911 and the police about her personal problems at being ignored by the pizza parlor, maybe a day or two in the polky will make her realize they are not there to deal with her little problems. When she goes to court, the judge can insist she receive counseling as a condition of parole.

It wasnt a telemarketer tho, because with them I just put the handset on the side and let them talk away. It was a recorded message that tells you youve won a prize and you have to press 0 or 9 to find out how to get the prize or stop them from calling. Its an out and out scam because pressing either of those puts you through to a premium line that racks up the cash. I knew what it was when it came through and tried to hang up, but it just wouldn't disconnect until the original message was through. Which I found creepy.

The battered car with the piza delivery sign strapped to the roof , says, "WE DELIVER", no conditions are placed on that announcement. Therefore, it is just possible the lady in Charlotte was correct in her original demand for delivery of a slice of pizza- and where else does one turn for help but to the "help line", 911.

                                                Cheers, John
