The expression "looks like a pig" refers to if it looks like racism, it probably is, not that anyone looked like a pig. I was referring to your feeling that the staring was racist was probably accurate. I DESPISE racism, as well as sexism, homophobia or any hatred of differences. You are very badly mistaken about my post.

I know it is a little off the path from 95, but we have gotten a couple of really good BBQ places here in the Triangle. My favorite one is called Dixie Belle BBQ & Chicken. His pulled pork is pretty much on 90% of the time and his beef brisket has been called some of the best this side of Texas and Memphis.

It is located on Us 64 in Apex, just outside of Raleigh NC

Anyway, back to the original theme of this thread......somebody wants some I-95 info. I recommend Willie's Wee-Nee Wagon or Norman's Eat and Run, both in Brunswick, GA on Altama Ave. (exit 38 off I-95 I believe). Good roadfood sandwiches, hot dogs, etc.

Boy hasn't this one gone off the end? Chill folks...chill.

Georgia Pig is highly recommended by this poster. NO OTHER CLAIMS ARE MADE. Racist? I've mostly been served by blacks when I was there. Or very nice grandmother types who were very kind. Just my experiences and they have been wonderful.

I live thirty miles from Lexington #1, may be the best BBQ on the planet, and think GA Pig is in the same league. Pass it up because someone was rude four years ago...well your choice.

Westwater country hams are located about three or four miles off 95 in Warsaw, NC if you want dome great country ham. Taste of Country has a good but not great buffet at the same exit. They used to put out 1/2 a pig at 11:30 and the other half at 12:30. Worth it to me...I know some basic cuts and eat well.

Sorry did not mean to start a race thing going. Have not been to the Pig in a number of years, my mom was in a nursing home in Fla. and i would stop going down and back when i visited her. She passed on in about 6 months so have not been there since.

i never saw any problems but i was always by myself, and the place is a shack but i think it's meant to be. i can still hear the sound of the meat cleaver chopping up the pork as soon as you get out of your car.
Try the combo platter if you stop!!!

            have a good trip jim

I'm a little too chilly lately, but that's December on Long Island. Rudeness is one thing, racism quite another (The Soup Nazi for instance). There's been more than a few threads regarding BBQ with more than a few posters discussing racism at this place, hence my remark "if it looks like a pig, (sounds like a pig and walks like a pig, it probably is a pig)".

Back in the mid sixties, I was taking a Greyhound bus to Florida when I took a walk during a short stop in Greenville SC. I was stunned to see a sign in the window of a laundromat, WHITE ONLY. It was a defining moment I'll NEVER forget, forging my hatred of bigots of any stripe. I'm sure not all the residents were racist, but it was tolerated there.

I choose not to patronize places that I feel are reprehensible. I will pay more to not shop at a company that has (what I believe to be) harmful policies. I avoid a company that makes a great beer whose founders and descendants have hateful (to me) politics.

Obviously people have had different experiences at The Georgia Pig. The Sundancer is relating what happened to him and his own principles, he clearly said others should do as they wish. Getting off the soapbox...

This is certainly an entertaining forum. It's a combination of Saturday Night Live and the Princeton Review. One thing, however, remains unclear: is Sundancer, aka Sundanger, going back to the Ga Pig or not?
I've been there several times and thought the staff was rude and the bbq just better than ok.

I know I have had the flag thrown on me for "beating a dead horse."

I gotta tell you....this horse is dead, buried, and the worms have eaten the corpse -- and yet, somehow, it is still getting beaten.

But back to I95, and bbq aide. Smithfield, NC (yes, to be confused with Smithfield, VA) is a good stop for ham.

                        And the "Dead Horse" is...

                        Georgia Pig's alleged racism?

                        Boycotting?

                        Other?

All this negative hype surrounding the Ga Pig is doing the opposite of deter me. It is really making me want to go and see for myself whether this place is racist or not. Not to mention I love good BBQ, and would like to give it a try.

One of the very sad things about the snow bird highway or I-95 is that there are few decent places to eat between VA and FLA. Smithfield BBQ chain places are ok. Westwater Ham (Warsaw, NC) is only a lovely father and son place to buy whole hams Highly recommended also, if for no other reason than to see the hand hewn horse troughs as big as VW's. Taste of Country (also in Warsaw, NC) is a 7 1/2 to an 8 at best. Phoenix Inn for lunch (Fayetteville, NC) is only acceptable if you have low blood pressure and run a few miles a day. Georgia Pig (St. Mary's, GA) obviously causes some issues w/ some folks.

I am ignorant of NE NC so other posters feel free to reply. 95 isn't nearly as bad as 40 west out of Wilmington...WASTELAND.

Sorry if people got mad at me or my posts were too opiniated. My apoligies ladies and gentlemen.

PS Johns72604 If you like the sauce at the Ga Pig and ask for some they wash out a used soda bottle and fill it for you...try and keep a straight face. I had to physically close my wife's mouth whe she saw it happen.

We like Ralph's BBQ in Rocky Mount (or the next exit?)
We usually get off 95 at Wilmington, Del. and take 301 till we rejoin 95 near Petersburg There's a whole lot of good eating along 301. We like the Houndstooth Inn in Hanover, Va. and we like several places in and around Kent Island. MD. - Fishermen's Inn ( a bit pricey), and Harris's Crab House, and Hemingway's.

                              Cheers, John

When passing by DC here are a couple places I like:

American food (diner): Silver Diner, Exit 56 (Potomac Mills) go towards Potomac Mills at the exit. Then left onto Smoketown Rd. It's pretty EZ ON- EZ OFF.

BBQ: Levi's BBQ, Get off 495/95 at Indian Head HWY and immediate get on Oxen Hill Road and left ontoLivingston Road. (google map it. You'll see where it is. Very close to the highway)

Hotdogs: Zack's Hot Dogs. It's a little off the beaten path, north of Baltimore. Again, I think google mapping it would be good. 8923 Old Harford Rd, Parkville, MD

Chili and other American favs: Hard Times Cafe. Also at Potomac Mills off of I-95. It's a DC chain of Chili restaurants. It's good roadfood.

(I hate listing chains, but I don't want to veer you off course too far and chains tend to be close to I-95)

Pizza: Faccia Luna, in Alexandria. Off of I-494/95, take Exit #177 C-B-A US 1, but follow the Church Street Exit. Left onto Washington Street. It'll be right there on your left 823 Washington Street. It's very close to the Highway. The best wood oven pizza!

                                have a safe trip.

Thanks to the many posters who are making valiant efforts to get this thread back on Track.
We do divert off of 95 into Savannah for a semi-destination type of stop! What a great town to make that type of a stop, for rest and food!

There's no question that rt. 301 has more road food places on it than I-95. At least in the MD and VA portions. But, fo a long time, they are not near each other, and rt 301 is a much slower route.
But, If you decide to take this route, let us know, and I'll give you some great seafood shacks and BBQ pit ideas.

Us old folks like to take 301 around the Washington/Baltimore area to avoid that awful traffic, and we like to make an overnight stop at Kent island - a nice 4 to 5 hour trip from our house. We are always open to new places for BBQ and seafood and will be making that run in early January.

                                          Cheers, John

no question. It's a more relaxing drive. And more interesting food choices.

Don's is very good, but it isn't at the Sav airport exit, it's one exit south between the airport exit and I-16. It's west of I-95 about 3-4 blocks.

I like the 301 alternative to Baltimore-DC -- definitely more interesting -- but have had some really nasty experiences with traffic at the Bay Bridge. Also, I'm told by some folks from that area that you have to watch the speed closely on the MD stretch north of the bridge -- 'cause there's other folks watching, too.

Thanks for the correction on the exit # for Pooler. As I mentioned on another forum a while back, Pooler has suddenly sprung up with a number of BBQ's besides Don's. We tried a couple on our last visit , and they were both good, I'll try to dig out their names.

We've had the Coffee Bluff place on our agenda for the past couple of years, but never got to visit it - it seems a bit off the beaten path.

Yes, the MD state cops work that stretch from Middletown to the Annapolis Bridge pretty heavy, but 60 seems to be within their tolerance. The worst traffic we run into is always around Waldorf and LaPlata - real bottlenecks. In the last two years we've stopped at the Houndstooth Cafe, intersection of 301 and 54? in VA,
for their BBQ pork shoulder. Although it is not "authentic", it is not smoked- it is slow cooked in an electric pit, it has a subtle smoked flavor and melts in your mouth.

Our next stop on the way south is usually Ralph's in Weldon, NC - very convenient to the I-95 exit, the place is big, but comfortable with excellent service and pretty good BBQ and hush puppies.

                                                            Cheers, John
