A Kentuciana meeting for a BBQ Sample (with Chicken too)

This Friday and Saturday MH and Lisa will venture South to join Janet and I for a celebration dinner or two.

The first being FRIDAY August 22  at the Moonlite BBQ in Owensboro KY. Knowing that both Michael and Lisa are not Buffet Fans, we are honored at their willingness to share this experience with us. The Friday evening buffet at the Moonlite is really quite good and at a reasonable price for what they serve. In addition to the usual Beef, Country Ham, chopped and chunk Pork, and pork ribs, chicken, chopped and chunk Mutton, Roast Turkey and gravy, they add Catfish-whole and filets, fried and boiled shrimp ,and fried oysters, Lots of hot veggie choices and a pretty good salad bar. I do like their pickled beets and Potato Salad
Dessert ranges from two or three cobblers, pecan, apple, lemon-icebox, chess, coconut cream, strawberry-rhubarb and a couple other flavor pies, carrot and fudge cakes, Banana Pudding and soft serve ice cream.
You should not leave hungry.  We will then waddle back across the river to Our home for the night.

Saturday the 23, After Michael Fills his Waffle House Limit (across from their motel) we will show them a few of the sights on our side of the Ohio River near Louisville. The Falls of the Ohio, of course are a prime scenic point.  If the water level is low enough we can walk the fossil beds below the falls. Millions-literally- of fossils are visible in the surface rock there, show history back to Michaels early jr high days...

Then it's up to Huber's Family Farm Restaurant in Starlite Indiana. For you SoCal folks, if you remember Knotss Berry Farm before it became a major theme park, thats sort of what Hubers is becoming. FIVE generations of the family  run or work at the restaurant, the farming operation, the brewery, the distillery (brandy and vodka) and the winery, fruit orchards, ice cream store, petting zoo, and a bunch of related seasonal business activities. THEN  We will enjoy a fine dinner again, served family style with a side of what they call fried biscuits and their own apple butter... a real treat !
If after all this we have room, we may stop at the local Graeter's for a farewell cone to send our visitors on their way back to the Buckey State with a smile on their faces.

I hope to document this visit with photos...as it has been a full decade since I first took photos of Lisa and Janet playing with the pup's after a meet-n-eat in 2004. We are really looking forward to the tenth anniversary meeting.

We are really looking forward to this weekend with Al and Janet!!  Haven't seen them since Glee Club in Mobile last year.  Moonlight BBQ was featured on the Travel Channel this evening and the food (especially the mutton) looks wonderful so we'll overlook the factor that it's a buffet and just dig in and enjoy!  Then Saturday at Huber's......wow!
I'll take lots of pictures too and hopefully Al won't catch me again in a "Twin Peaks" moment with the dogs!!

I take it you don't like mutton.  I prefer lamb and mutton to beef and pork!  I'll take lots of pictures......just for you!

I have to say I am with Jim. I don't know if it is the Mutton or the Soy Black Dip but I will do a sample and then turn to the Pork and Beef, or this time, mostly to the seafood. I pass on the chicken and turkey totally. but do hit the fried country Ham slices with the rest of the regular Pork 'Que.

I can see YOU and MH now in Top Hat and Tails, doing the old soft shoe shuffle while singing,
and swinging those canes,
" I GOT PLENTY A MUTTON AND MUTTON'S GOT PLENTY ON ME....."

I'll get Janet to get her accordian ready...I'll get my dark glasses on and a collection cap.

We had a wonderful time in Kentuckiana with Al and Janet!  We arrived Friday afternoon and got re-acquainted with Demi and met the new pups, Abby (a sweetie) and Gibbs (a little terror!).  Demi just wanted to sit next to me and be petted and when I stopped she let me know she wanted more by nudging my hand with her nose.  After chatting with Al and Janet we headed for Moonlight BBQ where there was a BIG surprise waiting for us.........Poverty Pete came to join us!!!  We were delighted to see him again!
As you all know, we are not big fans of buffets but this is no ordinary buffet!  There were so many things to choose from it was hard to know where to start.  Here is the hot line.

And the salad bar.

A lovely platter of ham and biscuits.

My plate:  BBQ mutton (fantastic!), pulled pork, fried oysters, green beans, collard greens.......all delicious!

And the most bizarre thing we've ever seen in a motel room!

The host and hostess with the mostest!

The next day we went to.......guess where for breakfast?........yep....Waffle House!!!  (I had a cup of tea.)  Then it was back to Al and Janet's house for more visiting.  We had lunch at Huber's Family Restaurant and I was a total knucklehead because I didn't take any pictures.  Maybe Al has some in his archives he can dig up.  MH and Janet both had the fried chicken livers.  I had a few from Michael's plate and they were delicious.  Al had the fried chicken.  Knowing we had a 4+ hour drive back home I went on the light side and had a salad.  Al and Janet got some Graeter's ice cream before dropping us off at our car.  We passed, as we have a Graeter's about 1 1/2 mi. from our house and have it whenever we want.

It sure was good seeing our friends and being in Kentuckiana!

My photo efforts were really slim too, Lisa. I'll add them here. just three at the Moonlite and a pup shot to show off the dogs. No food shots at all.  If you sent me the photo of Jan and I I'll run it thru my edit and brighten it up a bit for you.

Here is an earlier shot of a Hubers Livers and Chicken lunch... We really like the place and enjoy sharing time and good 'country food' with our friends.

As soon as I saw this picture, the first thing that came to mind was, Michael Hoffman FINALLY sprung for a classy shirt!

TTM, I thought I was giving you a break... but if you insist,...
The Travelin' Man makes reference to the devotion paid to him...and him only,
by our server at Huber's the day he joined us for lunch there.
She hung on his every word while delivering the various dishes of the Farm Dinner.
Just look at the emotion in her eyes in this photo.

PS- She was not present this past weekend. The photo is 5 years old.

Mayor, you should see the " uncropped" photo, showing exactly "how" she was pointing at the menu.

Ed,
I think your ears must have been burning Friday night because in between stuffing ourselves we were very glad to tell Al and Janet about your trip to Columbus, the Cincy chili crawl, Lake Erie, and lots more and what a great time we had with you!!!
Yes, I ate my fair share of mutton......delicious!
