A Perfect Evening in Baltimore...

3:00pm...Lexington Market's Faidley's Seafood (203 North Paca Street) for both their
well-documented-on-this-site all lump crabcake (with others in our party opting for the
equally delicious coddies [cod cakes]) and finished-off with the classic Berger Cookie.

 

 

4:00 pm...Courtesy of the always much-valued recommendation of this site's doesn't-

post-enough Signman, the Canton section of Baltimore for Matthew's Pizza (3131 Eastern
Avenue) -- Charm City's first pizzeria and still going strong after 65 years -- and fantastic
pastry crust pizza accompanied by Matthew's Pizza's famed "Pizza Fries" -- french fries
cooked about 3/4 the way through then spread out on a sheet of foil and topped with marinara
sauce, mozzerella cheese and a sprinkling of herbs before being put back in the pizza oven
resulting in the most delicious of treats (yet, oddly, listed on the restaurant's listing of subs).

 

 

5:00 pm...Gelato at the nearby satellite branch of Baltimore's famed Vaccaro's
(2919 O'Donnell Street) and on Canton Square. Simply perfect (and with Italian
shortbread cookies laced with sliced almonds to take home).
 

 
6:00 pm...The evening's main event, the Charm City Rollers'
seasonal opener at the DuBurns Arena (1301 South Ellwood Avenue).

 

    
 
Crabcakes, Baltimore pizza, gelato and roller derby. And

Tony--yeah, among my FB friends is a young lady who skates for Austin under the name Mona Littlemore.  :)  I don't think I would want to tangle with any of the Charm City crew.

Umm, okay. A crab cake made at a casino in Connecticut is better than any produced anywhere in Maryland. I imagine the casino does a bang up job on soft shell crab, too. Probably makes better ribs than anything Memphis has to offer, and better tacos than any truck in L.A.

I should mention that the specialty pizza at Matthew’s combines both in the form of it’s “Crab Pizza and featuring “100% backfin crab meat; blend of hand-grated mozzarella & imported reggianito cheeses topped w/carmelized onions & Old Bay Seasoning.”

One of the women on DC’s roller derby team is named Condoleezza Slice while another player for Boston is Killary Clinton. If you haven’t already and being that it’s now out on DVD, check-out the Ellen Page vehicle “Whip It” for a great insight into the low-budget world of the resurrected roller derby scene FEATURING the sport in Austin, specifically.

I can't speak to the crabcakes at Mohegan Sun, but I can say that I've never had better soft shell crab anywhere -- and that includes Maryland -- than I have had in Connecticut.

Great pics, really great shot of that crabcake! We caught a roller derby demo at the Ohio State Fair a couple of years ago - my favorite Derby name ever - Hellvetica!

My coworker's brother is a manager there and apparently "everyone from Maryland who has visited there has told his brother this".

I showed one of my other coworkers the roadfood list for Rhode Island and she singlehandedly shot every Rhode Island restaurant down, but she said Becky's BBQ is the best BBQ ever !

I was telling another coworker who is originally from Nebraska (and now a Rhode Island Brown noser) about Travelin Man's favorite Italian Restaurant in Omaha, I'm not sure of the name of the restaurant she thought it was a place called Solo Mio? and her response was "it's good for Omaha but it would never survive in Rhode Island" then again, she said Outback was  just as good as Johnny's Cafe in Omaha!

That is one beautiful crabcake. Why can't there be delicious and properly made crabcakes beyond Maryland? I can make excellent ones using the crab I purchase at the restaurant depot. The quality is excellent. What is the difference between a Maryland cake and one from anywhere else?  The clean and canned crabs come from the same processor and have to travel a little farther inland.
To say that you cannot get a great cake elsewhere is like saying you cannot get a great steak beyond Texas, or Nebraska or Chicago. There isn't a great steak in Florida...
I guess Michael Jordon is all sorts of messed up. Trying to sell steaks beyond the stockyards full of Chicago bulls and cows and then trying to throw in crab cakes too. 

Roller derby is popular in Austin and still going. There are a couple of teams including one that consists of mothers.
