A Quick Question About Rain Dates

With regard to scheduling, what do you guys do if an event has a rain date? I'm assuming you don't keep the day free on the chance it may rain and if so do you end up blowing off many events because or a weather double booking? Or do you only book rain or shine events and hope for the best? Dave

I show up rain or shine. You must be prepared for whatever the skies throw @ you. I do parties years round in Upstate NY & have yet to have a cancelation due to weather. Be adaptable & plan for more time in inclement weather.

I don't run a hotdog cart, but my business is similar in that I'm pretty much dependent on the skydivers right now for my income. If it's raining, the jumpers can't jump so we end up with a lot of short days in the Spring and Fall. We still show up though, regardless, because there's a few diehards that will hang around hoping for the skies to clear. Michael

Ok but what about more organized one day events like flea markets, concerts, street fairs, etc. that might have a rain date that would conflict with another event that you had signed up to sell at? Dave

Dave, You just have to work this sort of thing out per individual event. There will never be an answer that will work with all events. You can’t make the event organizer your enemy; you’ll want to come back next year right? If you can’t attend on the rain date just contact the event and explain, you just have to think this thing through, and work it out on a case by case basis. Why are you so worried about this in advance? Gosh there are so many variables involved, travel expenses, lodging, entry fees , product shelf life, and always how hard was it to score entry in the first place? Do you have a relationship with the organizer, does the organizer, have multiple vendors selling your product, the list is endless. You just have to work out this sort of thing on a case by case basis.

It is like Will Rogers once said when he was ask how to make money in the stock market. He said, "Making money in the market is easy. You buy a stock and when it goes up you sell it. If it doesn't go up, don't buy it" Rain is the same way. Book an event and sell in good weather. If it rains, don't book it' LOL Mike S.
