A Report from the Field (New Haven) ... Fri, 03/3/06 10:30 AM (permalink)
It was snowing yesterday and I was staying at the former HoJo in Hamden, now a Clarion and of course I was thinking Pizza.

In the old days I used to go to Bimonte's, but they closed and I had low hopes for the yuppie-type place coming in its place.

So, because of the weather, I took a gamble and tried Eli's ... they even had the JB Special on the menu. I tried it and I liked it. As good as, if not better than the predecessor (that may be due to the brick oven they are now using).

My office is about halfway between where you're staying and Eli's, and I hate to admit that I have not yet made it to Eli's, but your post sure makes me want to. I LOVED the JB special.

You may think I'm crazy, but I actually enjoy the food at the diner out in front of where you're staying. I had noticed a lot of the areas elderly eating there, so I figured "what the heck". It's very good for the price. My mom loves it. Go figure.

I remember the good ole day's of Hamden Pizza and restaurants as well. In the late 60's and 70's Bimonte's pie was almost on par with the Wooster St. gang. Fireside and Glenwood had great dogs and little known Daisey Italian Deli had fantastic Spinach bread.

For spinach bread it is hard to beat DiSorba's on Dixwell Ave.
