Well folks, the South Suburban Roadfood tour is ten days away. I know who is definitely not attending, but I'm still not exactly sure who is. I really need to hear from everyone who's planning to attend, so that I can finalize my plans for the day. Names please...

You guys will have to count me out on this one. I was just informed I am working until 10pm on the 21st. With leaving for Sheboygan @ 630AM Saturday, the logistics are getting messed up in my head.

However, as usual, if someone from MKE is going I will shell out gas money to ride with you guys, I can even have the getaway driver for the Miesfeld's brats & City Bakery buns drop me off closer to the eastern half of the city!

PM me if you got something cooking, me & my camera would love to come.

Aww, no girls shopping day down here on Friday, stricken?  Poop.

Well, count us (me and Mr. Maki) in for two.  I may mention it to a couple of friends, so I'll let you know if we'll be more than this.

Time to haul this thread up to the top again, seeing as how the tour takes place this Saturday.

So, what's new Bob?  How's the planning coming along?

Seeing as how this has developed into an all Chicago group (the Milwaukee folks heard their mothers calling and had to go home), this would be a perfect opportunity for some of the Chicago posters who have never gone out on a tour before to join in.

Is anybody listening???

What's new? Nothing really, Buddy, except that I plan to hide under my bed and not come out until Sunday.   Actually, everything's going fine; I'm finalizing my plans for next Saturday and will post them tomorrow. I'm just a bit disappointed that Milwaukee's not going to be represented at this roadfood tour. Oh well...

We could be three, and offered to pick up stricken in Kenosha or Pleasant Prairie if she can get a ride down there.  We'll keep you posted.

It's three days and counting, gang, so I guess it's time for me to tell you where to go and when to get there ( hmmm... that line has unintended implications.  ) Our scheduled meet-up is at 10:00 AM Saturday morning in the parking lot of Popolano's Restaurant here in Lansing. Popo's is on Torrence Ave., about a mile or so south of I-80/I-94/I-294. Torrence is the last exit in Illinois ( eastbound ); if you miss the exit you'll be paying an impromptu visit to Munster Indiana. Once you exit the interstate onto southbound Torrence, you will go through two traffic lights before seeing Popolano's on the right. If you'd like to have my phone # ( in case of last-minute cancellations or problems enroute ), just PM me. In the next day or two, I'll make up printed directions to the various eateries for everybody. If you have any questions, complaints, threats of bodily harm, etc., just send me a PM and I'll get back to you pronto.

What time does Popolano's open?  If we get there at 10:00am will we be waiting in the parking lot for them to open their doors?  I checked their website and found no information on this point.

Buddy, Popolano's isn't our first meal stop; we won't be eating there until dinnertime. I just picked it as a very convenient and easy to find place for us all to meet up in the AM. Sorry about the confusion. Our first food stop will be Simply Slices in Crestwood for pizza, and from there it's Nick's BBQ in Palos Heights for ribs. After that, we'll head northwest to the Country House for burgers. Heading back east towards Lansing, a stop at The Plush Horse in Palos Park for homemade ice cream is an option, although I wonder if anyone will be interested after three food stops in a row ( it's really good ice cream, though. ) Back in Lansing, it's Popo's for dinner ( IMHO, the best fried chicken in Chicagoland ), and, lastly, over to neighboring South Holland for the best homemade ice cream ( again, IMO ) at Cunis, an old-fashioned ice cream and candy shop that's been my favorite since the 1960s. And after that... everyone go home, I'm tired of looking at y'all!!

Sounds good Bob.  With Popolano's being the next to last stop we might even be able to consolidate cars there and pick them up at the end of the day.  Will they allow us to do that?  Might be worth a phone call to explain our circumstances and see if they'll help out.  I'm thinking we wouldn't need to leave more than one or two cars.

If you want to consolidate cars, we could leave one or two parked in front of my apartment building; we have to pass right by my place when we head towards Crestwood. Just a thought.

What time would I have to be in Kenosha in order for us to make it to Popolano's by 10AM?

Miesfeld's doesn't open until 8. It will take another 60-90 minutes to get back to my car in the 'Sha. Another 60 to get to Kenosha. I wouldn't be able to get there until 1030 at the very earliest. :(

I do appreciate the offer, though.

Unless Bob wants to move back his start time to 12:30pm.

Bob, how much ground do we need to cover?  Is it worth moving things back 2 1/2 hours to pick up one more person (a valued addition, I might add)?  Maybe if we all meet at Simply Slices rather than rendezvousing at Popolano's and then going to Simply Slices from there?  It would save driving time, cutting the loss of a later starting time.

Just a thought.  It's your tour and I ain't tellin' ya how to run it.  Just trying to maximize your turnout.

Whatever people want to do is fine with me.  It will be Mr. Maki and I, and stricken if no carolina wants to re-organize.  Our additional friend cannot make it.

One would normally think that this would throw a huge monkey wrench into the "plan" for the day, . . . one valued addition or not! !

You could be right, that's why I'm putting it out there and leaving it up to the tour organizer as to how he wants to proceed.  Bob was concerned with a potential low turnout, hence my asking the question.

Perhaps you would care to join our group and bump the attendance up by one or more.

Buddy, I have no problem with rearranging things somewhat if it'll make it possible for Aimee to attend. Meeting at Simply Slices at 12:30 works just fine. For those of you who will be heading south on I-94 ( the Dan Ryan Expressway ), be sure to be all the way over in the right lane before 95th St. so that you can get onto southbound I-55 ( the expressway splits in two there ). Take I-55 south to the Sibley Blvd. exit ( aka 147th St. ) and head west on Sibley for a few miles until you hit Cicero Ave. Turn right ( north ) on Cicero, and after a half mile or so, you'll see Simply Slices on your left. ChiTownDiner, if you're reading this, your best bet is to take I-355 to the Lockport exit ( 159th St. aka IL Hwy. 7 ) and head east on IL 7 to Cicero Ave. and then turn north. There's not a great deal of seating in Simply Slices, so we may have to beat up a few non-roadfooders and toss 'em out in order for our group to have enough tables.

You guys are awesome!!!

"Perhaps you would care to join our group and bump the attendance up by one or more."

That is what I'm talking about! I bought batteries for the camera. I can't wait to see Bob's choices since he has put up with ours for so long.

And I'm looking forward to seeing CTD  & representing for the WI crew.

If I were all of you, I would worry about abe_froeman, Mr Maki,  & stricken_d getting sidetracked in Glenview (we will have to go past there to get to the southside after all!!!!!!) by a little place called fRedhots. (garlic frites, garlic aioli)

And Bob, don't worry about the seating. It's not Roadfoodin' Third Coast Mafia style if you're not eating off the trunk of Buddy's car at *some* point in the tour! ("Mmmmmm, this kringle tastes like blueberry pie on crack." )

I'm envious that you're all going to have such a good time tomorrow, while others of us (*ahem*) will be plugging away at tasks that are much less fun. I've been reading only good things about Simply Slices, and the other stops look great, too. Can't wait for the trip report!

So, now we know that stricken_detective is in.  Does meeting at Simply Slices at 12:30 work for everybody?  Bob has given us good directions and it should be an easy matter to gather there, yes?

I just sent ChiTownDiner a PM, so hopefully he'll know about the changes in time. Buddy, since you have Gregg's number, maybe you could give him a call in the morning, just to be sure.
