Unfortunately the weather's probably going to keep us from attending.  Not because it's bad, but because it's good and we have some outside work to do.  Perhaps tomorrow night I'll be able to share a hilarious story about falling off the roof while cleaning the gutters...

Rookie roadfooder mistake.

My first of the day was at Glorioso's where I had the Human Torch Sandwich. Very good, loved the heat and the combo of flavors but Huuuuuggggeee and very very greasy. I ate half of it. Even though I enjoyed the heat and combo of flavors, it really was too greasy. Probably won't buy it again because of that. Grease literally poured off the sandwich. I'd rather buy the ingredients from Glorioso's and make my own sandwich.

So now I'm stuffed to the gills and overly greased out.

Next stop at Parthenon, after everyone shopped there was a lot of sharing off the trunk I'll let someone else elaborate! But I was too stuffed and greased out to partake so I missed out on a bunch of tasting.

Regardless, I had such a wonderful time! Thanks X1 and ChuckL50 for the work on putting this together. It was great meeting so many really nice, down-to-earth people.

Just had a fabulous dinner leached off today's grocery haul. Smoked trout from Parthenon, french bread from Sciortino's (that I actually bought in Glorioso's), artichoke fritters from Glorioso's, and my own homemade dilly beans (spicy-vinegary green beans). WOW. Happy tummy.

Plus.... I now have my very own roadfood.com / wwbbd? wristband!

It was a great day (perfect weather!) and a round of applause to X1 for organizing it!

Great pictures Abe. It was a perfect Milwaukee fall day. Remember the cliche of my dog ate my homework? Well our cat ate my WWBBD wristband. Must have tasted like tuna pie to her.

ChuckL deserves as much or more of the credit. He did most of the work.

X1 & ChuckL organized a great tour. The weather was perfect and every location was exceptional, offering new and different culinary delights. The owner of Glorioso's opened up the back room of his store for the contingent to enjoy their first meal. Thank you Mr. Glorioso! The heat that was generated from the giardinara on Bob's Italian beef, not only warmed the room, it reminded me of the time I unknowingly downed a huge piece of wasabi. Talk about hot! The muffalata was superb, dressed with an abundance of olive oil, similar to Cj's sandwich. Next time, I'll request light oil. To be continued....

Regarding that tamal shown in abe froeman's gallery, irisarbor perfectly and poetically described it as tasting like solid chicken soup.  She was spot on with that interpretation!  The tamal had all the flavor, richness, and health inducing qualities of baubie's (grandma's) homemade elixir.

Sounds like a great time and I'm sorry I missed it, but that might turn out to be a silver lining for the rest of you.  I woke up this morning feeling like I'd been worked over with a Louisville Slugger; I don't know if I'm just sore from 2 days of manual labor or if I'm coming down with a bug but I would've hated to pass something on!

Thanks for the props. My thanks to X1 for getting this started and helping me with the cat herding.  Glad everyone found something to enjoy on this trip.  Great seeing everyone again.

ChuckL50 & X1 - Thanks for organizing a great day.  We found some new favorites on Sunday.  I can tell from abe's gallery that we stopped at the wrong el Rey.  The big one we went to did not have the character of the other one.

MFL - Don't worry about the WWbbD? wristband.  I've got another for you.  Just bring a note from your vet.

Brad_O - Too bad that you missed out on the Black Taco.  nocarolina will vouch for how good it was.

Sounds like you all had a fun Sunday. Wish I coulda been there, but at least I managed to have a breaded pork tenderloin sandwich on the road in Indiana that day....

I agree that the sandwiches at Glorioso's can be a tad oily, but they are good indeed. If worse comes to worse, empty out the contents of the sandwich onto a napkin, then soak, then transfer drained goods back into sandwich roll.

Did you all make it to the Public Market?  I may even go there for lunch tomorrow (half-price oysters on Thursdays)....

The whole irisarbor clan really enjoyed themselves, especially the adventurous young man, who had his first oyster AND clam on the half shell...
And the stay at home stick in the muds enjoyed all the goodies that were packed home in the trunk.

As i sit here, I am even gazing over at my mexican votive candle, guaranteed to shut the mouths of my enemies... (if only)

El Rey Market, the popular south side grocery and Mexican restaurant, recently received 10 critical health violations, making it Milwaukee’s most-cited spot in the past month.

A critical violation is one that is serious enough to increase a patron’s risk of getting sick from a food-borne illness.

On Oct. 12, an inspector found a host of problems at El Rey’s 916 S. Cesar Chavez Dr. location, including a meat slicer used to cut raw chicken and raw beef, which can cause cross-contamination, records show.

The inspection report details meat trays and dirty dishes being stored on the floor and fruit flies in the juice area, along with an ice machine, sugar cane machine and juice equipment that an inspector deemed unclean.

Records show there were no paper towels at the hand sinks in the meat department, the deli or the produce processing areas.

In addition, workers in the El Rey deli were not date-marking products. If food is held for more than 24 hours, it must be marked to indicate the day by which it’s supposed to be consumed or sold.

El Rey Mexican Products Inc. administrator Olivia Villarreal said all the violations were corrected and the company is now requiring department heads at the grocery to maintain employee checklists on health issues like proper hand washing procedures.
“This is very serious in our eyes,” Villarreal said. “We let our guard down. There is no excuse. Our department heads of the meat and deli departments should have known better. They know all the rules. We will hold them accountable from now on."

I have no reason to believe those corrections were made by the day of our tour.  Fortunately, I don't think any of purchased any food that wasn't pre-packaged at the big El Rey store.

Mr. Maki and I had some of the carnitas- we were fine....as fine as could be expected after eating all that food that day, anyway.
