A Taco Bell challenge Wed, 06/10/09 11:03 AM (permalink)
I challenge anyone to go to their nearest or furthest Taco Bell and place 89cents on the counter and see if they let you walk away with their 89cents burrito as they show on TV. Besides that TV ad being deceitful because there is no Taco Bell with a "leave a penny-take a penny" tray on their counter, there is sales tax added to the price of every menu item so 89cents won't get you a burrito as seen on TV.

Another lie propogated by Taco Hell. Caveat Emptor--Buyer Beware!
P T Barnum was correct!

We need complete reform of advertising guidelines of every product and service, TV, radio and print.

89 cents will most surely get you said burrito in Portland, OR....or any of the other few localities where sales tax is not collected.

Perhaps Taco Bell assumes that you will purchase their product in Portland?

With your requirements, it would be impossible for any national company to ever advertise a price of anything on TV or radio, since it would be ridiculously expensive to make a different commercial including the sales tax price for every single city and town in the U.S. (Locally, we have an additional tax on food and drink to benefit the Civic Center; right across the river, which is a different city and county, they don't.)  Both cities obviously get the same channels on TV, the same stations on radio.  (In fact most of our local channels also cover another city 50 miles away, which has a totally different sales-tax structure.)  With no national advertising possible, forget about any major TV or radio shows, sports or specials.

Get real.  Any person with common sense knows that their own sales tax (if applicable) will be added to the advertised price of any product!

There's no tax on a burrito, or any other food, for takeout in Ohio. So 89 cents will get you a burrito as seen on TV (although I've never seen it on TV, personally).

Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire and Oregon should get you an 89 cent taco with no state sales tax, unless there is a local community sales tax. Regardless, at 89 cents they've just about guaranteed you can get a taco even with tax for under a buck and still leaves some pennies in the tray.

And the Taco Bell near my house does, in fact, have a "take a penny, leave a penny" tray.

No tax in Ohio on food "to go"
If you order "for here" it's taxed

In Kentucky, sales tax is charged regardless
