I have never understood why Maryland/VA/Delaware/lower NJ have not developed a fried clam and or any clam business here.  Crabs are all the rage

I'm originally from Southern Va. (Newport News) My brother lives in Poquoson, Va, a small waterman town on the Va. peninsula next to Hampton. Clams are pretty big business in Poquoson (or "Bull Island" as the locals like to call it). Just about any seafood restaurant in the area will have clams on the menu, both fried and steamed. My brother makes the best clam chowder (I AM a bit biased, lol) and instead of fried clams, he makes clam fritters. He buys the clams from local dealers, but sometimes we go out into the Poquoson River with our rakes and get our own.

92 messages so far on a "rookie" trip report. That's got to be some sort of a record!

Very nice report and great pictures.  Thanks for sharing with us.  As a confirmed fan of apizza, I can say that once you've had it, it's hard to find any pizza as good.  And the other food (along with the visits with folks) sounds pretty good also.

The house where MH grew up in New Haven.  Can't you just imagine him riding his tricycle down the street?

That can be the house MH grew up in it's not a cave or made of logs

Thanks for the birthday wishes!

I think the locals eventually evacuated him from the cave.......the critters were a nuisance......and the log cabin was replaced by this house!  It was actually a very beautiful street.

The trip was great.  The food was great.  Even the weather was great.  But the best part was meeting up with friends.....chewingthefat, Mrs. chewy, daughter kelliann, mosca, Mrs. mosca, MikeS., Dale and Sandra.
Now I'm ready for another clam pie from Pepe's!!

Great trip, great report, and belated happy birthday wishes!  All that seafood looks terrific...I would've done the exact same thing!

So apparently the statute of limitations has expired and Michael's once again allowed in New Haven?

There was just one moment while passing the police precinct around the corner from my old house when I was a little concerned.

In anticipation of our Independence Day - 4th of July get together, my beautiful bride and I decided, well she decided that we, meaning me, would try my hand at smoking a brined corned beef brisket. Although we will be doing a pit for our meats for the 4th, I fired up the smoker using primarily grape cane and apple wood. The brisket weighed in at 9 pounds. I figured about 9 hours - ended up at 10 hours.  It ended up with a nice smoke ring. The general consensus was that it was very, very good. The taste was a bit harder, in a good way, than doing it in the oven w/ cabbage and baby reds. It turned out very moist, actually more moist than I thought it would. I just finished making, and eating a Rueben w/ home made sauerkraut. a Russian dressing and mustard on rye. While I don't know if it will supplant the traditional method. It will certainly co-exist w/it on future occasions. Thanks to all who spoke to the issue.

I really, really, really want to go back. I am in dire need of more fried clams, another apizza, a few lobster rolls and some really good split, grilled hot dogs. Some time on the beach wouldn't be too hard to take, either.
