A new turntable

Costco is now selling a new vinyl record turntable. I guess all that is old is truly new again. This one comes with the RCA plugs and a USB plug. Plus the software so you can play a record into your PC and record your old vinyl into a digital format. MikeS.

Gee..... I must check it out. I still have all my records I have not played in over 20 years because the needle to my the SONY turntable costs more than the turntable.

I had set up my rig so that I could record albums to .wav or .mp3; the problem wasn't that it's hard, the problem is that you have to do it in real time. A lot of music, once you hear it again you're set for years. I have thousands of LPs. And I have more invested in my stereo than most people have in their cars. But I mostly listen to my Creative Jukebox 3. Tom

I was just thinking about these yesterday but didn't know about the direct-to-pc software. Is it reasonably easy to use? Someone on an online review didn't seem to think so.

Someone on an online review didn't seem to think so. There's a turntable at a computer supply store for $200, that plugs directly into the PC. There's a tape deck that does the same. A bunch of us at work are thinking of buying both items, "digitalizing" all our LPs and cassettes, then selling the equipment on E-Bay.

My problem is, I have perhaps a thousand LPs only in vinyl; ie, not duplicated on CD or mp3 or aac. If I spent 3 hours a day 5 days a week, it would take 2 years to transfer them to digital, figuring 1.5 hours per album (45 minutes of playing time + 45 minutes each of setting song breaks & titling/tagging). For that kind of time, I'll buy or download them, thanks... except of course there's a reason those thousand albums haven't already been repurchased. When will I ever listen to The Motels again, or Pearl Harbor & the Explosions? Or The Boston Pops Christmas Album? Sure, I loved AOXOMOXOA in 1972... but once every 20 years is plenty, now. The one time playing it for transcription is plenty. Tom

A few years ago I heard Gary Lewis on the radio plugging his local visit. He was touring with his friend, Mark Linday, one time lead for Paul Revere and the Raiders. He said that he loves CDs, because all his fans have had to re buy his old records, giving him a nice (and unexpected) shot of income in his old age. BTW, if you get to see the show, it is worth the trip, and not very expensive.

Remember how long it took if you wanted to make a "mix tape"? Put the album on, cue up the right song, turn on the cassette player, drop the needle, when finished, pick up the needdle, stop the cassette, old album off, new one on, repeat.....get half way through a song and have the cassette run out.... Now it's plug in the ipod and let er rip! My daughters' ipod holds over 1000 songs.
