AB's - 20,000 lbs of meat a week!

Arthur Bryant's on Brooklyn Avenue & 13th...Well that's what they said on the Travel Channel...They serve 20,000 lbs of meat a week. I know we got like 2 lbs of the most incredible brisket I've ever had on our sandwich.

This was a really good show. The highlighted Krutz's in Texas. The place boasted that they serve no sides..no sauce...no plates with their "Q"

Is that on average or just the weeks that Buffetbuster is there?

I did not misunderstand the commentator on the show. Yes, it seemed like a lot of meat to me, too. But, it was a week..not a month. Maybe someone else also saw the show?

These folks have a place in the Ameristar Casion if I am sure its the same folks. I could see that location doing 5k in meat a week with ease. I have been there many times. Like over 20.

I am not sure if they are the same folks. I will have to go check. I do know the one in Ameristar serves full service. This place sells sides and all.

My understanding is that the non-downtown KC locations of Arthur Bryant's are not up to par with the original location, which has its own fair share of detractors.

It would not surprise me, however, to think that they could do 20k lbs of meat in a week. They sell a lot of their product by the pound, so I guess the math would be easy enough.

It would also not surprise me to learn that they go through an equal amount of potatoes, as their homemade french fry portions are also huge.

Am I the only one who is confused here?

I still don't know what show you are referring to, and I have no idea what the Ameristar Casion is and what it has to do with Arthur Bryants.

    Me Either, Signman.

I do know that Pat Bosley one of the owner/operators of the Moonlite BBQ told our Roadfood group that Moonlite does 20,000 pounds a week during the busy (Warmer) season. That includes the catering and mail-order sections as well as the retail restaurant.

The show was on in the afternoon on the Travel Channel this past week. I am sorry I do not remember the name of the show. I will go on the Travel Channel website and see if I can find it. It was hosted by a young woman.

Traveling Man - We went to the original store on Brooklyn Ave; I'd heard it was better than their other store. There are many arguments as to who has the best "Q" in KC. I have no idea..

Sadly, we only got a chance to try AB's when we were in KC; it was the best I've ever had by a wide margin to this day...My comparisons being places in Memphis, Florida, Georgia, Alabama, South Carolina and North Carolina. Never been to Arkansas,Texas or Oklahoma.

I got the name of the show I saw where they said this about the 20,000 lb a week..It was on Wednesday, March 26th at 2:00 PM - It was called "BBQ Bastions" Look for the next time they are going to show it on the Travel Channel.

There was a really good BBQ show on the History Channel on 3/27 at 7:00 PM.

Daytrader said Arthur Bryant has a place at the Indian Reservation Casino and I believe he is correct on that. Maybe they are including that place too in the 20,000 lb weekly meat order? The show's commentator never mentioned that though.

Bill .....I've mentioned the show. The only confusion is that Daytrader mentioned Arthur Bryant's has another location at the casino. Someone more familiar can comment. We were told to go to the original location on Brooklyn Avenue..that's were we went.

BB, the ameristar is a riverboat. There's no reason to go to anywhere but the original localtion, so you did right.

When I was dating my wife, who at the time lived in KC..on my visits to her,she always took me to Arthur Bryants....ny nthe length of the lines all the time, that number doesn't surprise me! Great food too, although we preferred smaller Rosedale Barbecue..cheaper too!

Lee - If I would have taken my wife to AB's while we were dating, I'd have only been married once..Not twice.

I hear lots of people like Gates and there's another one Fiorella's? There are a few in KC, MO that are supposed to be just as good as AB's A matter of taste. Incidently, we thought it was a really nice town. I would have loved to have a steak dinner there, too. Instead, we spent too many days in Memphis..A story for another day.

If they were open 7 days a week, 14 hrs. a day they would have to serve 3 customers a minute over a full pound, every minute they were open. I'm skeptical about numbers like that from 1 restaurant.

Actually if you have been to AB's that's pretty accurate.

Did you calculate the weight loss during the smoking process? 20,000 pounds of meat before smoking and after trimming, equals not much more than 15,000 - 16,000 pounds after smoking, if that much.

Zatar, With all that loss during the cooking process, they would run out of food when the Meet and Eat group gets there !!

Well, there is easily a pound of meat on an AB sandwich.

And there always seems to a line!

Super Dave - thanks for the pictures...What memories. The Wonder Bread is the best...You put million dollar tasting meat on that stuff. And, for me, I had to eat the bread because otherwise it is not a sandwich and it's a platter, which I do not like. It was their lard cooked fries that did me in though. "Short-End ribs..that's what I had and the brisket sandwich....I have my drink cup sitting in my office along with a picture of me standing in front of the place on Brooklyn Ave.

Perhaps the moderator was also including their meat order for their casino store, too? I have no idea. I heard correctly and I've given you all the name of the show so next time the Travel Channel runs it, see for yourselves.

I think 20% loss is somewhat accurate for smoking meats. I'll have to check it out the next time I smoke 20,000 lb. of meat!

You're absolutely right Supe. What's interesting is, if you look carefully at the menu, it's way more expensive to buy the meat by the pound than it is by the sandwich, even though you're getting roughly the same amount of meat, plus a few slices of cheap white bread!

I hope nobody at AB's figgers it out, they'll raise the price of a sandwich before they lower the price of the per pound meat.

I think I've told this story on here before, but my friend Dana and I were Blueprint delivery drivers in Midtown KC way back when. When Arthur died, Dana went by the funeral home for the public viewing(while on the clock). Unfortunately, a reporter liked his comments about what a great man Arthur was so much , he quoted Dana in the paper. He didn't even get fired over it, such was the stature of Arthur in KC.
