A&W fast food joint? Anyone eaten there ?

I was driving through Terrell Texas yesterday and noticed a flashing billbord at A$W that said "Have a bowl of chili, $1.49". It was in the same building as Long John's. Anyone know anything about their food?

A&W (a while ago) had a semi-viable flame-broiled burger ... I think the chances that their chili is anything but institutional are almost nil.

I'd personally no be inclined to gamble even that much money (or use up a valuable bit of appetite) on their chili.

    Let us know.

I have noticed several buildings that contain both A&W and Long john's. I guess they must be owned by the same company?

I cannot comment on A&W but I can with long John's. In my opinion they are not very good anymore.. I can recall many years ago that they were very good. They ain't there anymore as far as I am concerned.

Great one, I agree, odds would be like winning the lottery that they have even a decent bowl of chili. But, just thought someone might have taken the gamble. Their burgers...sounds like they were ok. Maybe they have something else eat..able???

Actually Yum Brands owns KFC, Pizza Hut, A&W, Taco Bell & Long Johns Silver. In different parts of the country you'll see them paired differently.. Sometimes three in a location.

I used to go when I lived in Texas, actually had a decent Bacon Cheeseburger but the main reason I went was for the Root Beer which is still made on location and served in that Frosty Mug.

The A & W here in Versailles KY is paired with a LJS. Their burgers are pretty good. I don't care for LJS anymore as the fish is soggy and nothing like it used to be. It used to have a crunch.

I like A&W's Papa burgers with the thousand island dressing, but as Sundancer mentioned, they are coupled with a LJS and the fries are intolerable.

If I eat Long Johns anymore, i'm messed up for two days for some reason. Just entirely too much grease.

There's an actual, by-God A&W root beer stand outside of Akron that my brother in law and I ate at a couple of years back. It's in a small town to the east of Akron and it was just like I remember it as a kid. Great root beer and the burgers were better than average. Plus you get to eat in the car under an awning. Too cool. The total for the meal, four big burgers and four huge root beers, came to around $10. I'd take that deal again in a heartbeat.
As for the Long John's/A & W, no thanks. I worked in a Long Johns in the mid-80's and the smell of the place puts me off food for a while. Nasty.

The A&W/Long Johns combo have been popping up here in the western PA area alot lately. They are just O.K. in my book as far as fast foods go...

And...When we go down to the Dollywood area (Pigeon Forge, TN), there is an old fashiond A&W standalone carhop. The food is pretty good and my kids love it. The dogs are good, the chili is good and the onion rings are pretty good too. IMHO, it's above average as far as fastfood goes.

But when I was a kid, we had an old fahioned A&W carhop here in Pittsburgh and it was burgers and rootbeer. It was the only one of it's kind in this area at the time. It closed about 20 years ago.

They built 2 A&W/LJS im my area last year. One already closed. There was a long standing A&W Root Beer stand in St. Charles, MO for several years that I used to go out of my way to go to, as the food was excellent. The food at the combo resturant is nowhere near as good as the food was from the old drive-in resturant.

The best thing about A&W is of course the Root Beer - The A&W Root Beer in a can doesn't much resemble what they sell at the resturants. I always pick up a gallon to bring home...

I agree with that. When I was a kid in Wisconsin, we had an A&W drive in that was only open from March until September or October. They used to serve their rootbeer in glass mugs and their Papa Burgers were the best. Now they have the imitation A&W here at the mall and they suck. I also ate at the one in the airport in Minneapolis. I thought my stomach was going to explode on the flight home after that one!

From 1966 until the very early 70s that place had the best fries and root beer in glass mugs. When I saw one in the mall, I was sure that it had to be a newfangled creation and nothing like the real stands. I really do miss those. I still had the mugs until recently.

    Hello All,
In Harrisonburg, Va., we have A&W in our Kentucky Fried Chicken places.
They re-opened together about a year or so together.
There was no difference in the KFC part of offerings and quality.
A&W offered burgers, dogs, and different fries.
The burgers were great, for about a month. Now, they are dry and
    have almost a processed flavour.
The dogs, "coney" I believe, are okay.
The fries are dry and non-meaty middle, if you know what I mean.
    Take Care,

Ditto! (except for me, it was a bit later. Like 79-80-ish)

My wife's grandparents use to take her to an A & W when she was little. She, like me, remembers the A & W fondly. So, when we saw one in our travels lately, we went there. BIG mistake. IT wasn't even close to the original hop.

I had a hot dog at one that opened in tandem with Long John Silvers, and one bite and I tossed it.

Silvers had gotten trashed by Frances, and Charlie, and Jeanne. LOL, so when they rebuilt, they did the duo restaurant in one.

The city I grew up in had 3 freestanding stores at one point, all are now gone. We do still have one in Racine, Wisconsin, right off the freeway. Last time I was there was a very long time ago & the food was good. Not sure I'd go there now.

There are only 2 LJS that I know of in the area, one is mixed w/a Taco Bell & those jerks will not make you a fish taco. The other one is in Kenosha, near the border & they are no Arthur Treachers.

There was an A&W in Albuquerque on the backside of a Texaco. Hoping to relive my dreams, I tried a cheeseburger and Root Beer. The Root Beer was good - the cheeseburger reminded me of the microwave burgers at a 7-Eleven. Never again.

they have a few of them in northern VA. It's tough to tell if they're any better, worse, or the same as Long John Silvers.
I suppose I'd have to try each to see. But, I'm not sure I want to.

Also there is a Arthur Treachers on I-95 N of Baltimore in one of the Gas/Food stops (in this part of MD they are in the middle of the North and South bound lanes).

Also down in Florida around Key Largo there was an Arthur Trachers that was paired with a Miami Sub franchise.

There is still an A&W drive-in at the juncture of routes 281 and 13 in Cortland NY, source of memories of my youth, I still go occaisionally with my family for cheese burgers and rootbeer floats...though I'm more inclined to have the grilled chicken sandwich these days (they're not bad)..
