Akron, Ohio

The family is considering a trip to Akron in a few months. I need info about the area. Where to stay or not and of course where to eat.

Thanks people,

MikeS.

There's tons of neat places to eat around Akron. As for staying there, the place I've stayed at most of my visits to NE OH is Holiday Inn @ Fairlawn. It's on I-77, convenient to anywhere I want to go in the area, excellent shopping area, the hotel has a decent breakfast buffet each morning. I've been staying there for 10 years. Look on the map, you can't miss it.

I used to go to a steakhouse called The Diamond Grille when I frequented Akron for business several years ago. It was pretty good. Don't know if it still is. Never really found a great meal in town.

I had the best pizza in my whole life at
Gino's - or - Luigi's (i forget which it is) in downtown Akron.
They are open until 3 am or something but they use tap water in the dough
which is a hard water and it makes the dough and the pizza
    UNBELIEVABLE!!!!

I have seriously considered having this pizza FedEx'd to me in Atlanta
    because it's THAT GOOD.

    Burgerclown,

It is Ginos. And I agree, great pizza! And I love their salad too.

I've never tried it but I heard that Barberton chicken is a specialty. Famous place to try: Belgrade Gardens. Barberton chicken is fried chicken cooked in lard. Side dishes: a tomato-rice dish, freshly made cole slaw.

There is a drive-in in Fairlawn right next to the big shopping mall that has car service, decent shakes and other goodies. I just can't recall the name. I used to like a place called Lou and Hy's that was a Jewish deli but I could not find it when I was in town a year ago. Anyone know anything about the places

The great taste is the dough itself. They use tap water which is
a very 'hard' water whereas most pizza joints(at least in Atlanta)
use spring water or whatnot. Best pizza dough EVER!!!

I should know the place in Fairlawn you're talking about but I can't place it. We talked about Akron in another thread and I mentioned lou & Hy's. It was oneof my favorite places as well and had been open forever, but someone wrote in and said it had been closed.

yea Lou & HYs is gone but the Drive In you all were trying to think of is SKY WAY. Great onion rings!

The Diamond Grille is still in biz and really good but not inexpensive.

Friends rave about the Hyde Park Grille at the Holiday Inn that one of you mentioned. Again not inexpensive but I guess it really is great.

My favorite is Ken Stewart's Grille on west Market. Really great food and lots of it. Again, alas, not cheap food.

There are lots of less expensive places but these are the best.

    Enjoy,

The best pizza is at Luigi's, and they have a cold pasta salad to die for. Very colorful, with hand-painted wall murals, and a little mechanical "band" over the entrance that "plays" when someone plays the jukebox. Great prices! Eat early to avoid the crowds that pack them in every night. But the line moves along, so you don't have to wait too long.

If you want to try "adventurous pizza," at a very reasonable price, try Piatto on South Main. Yummy toppings, such as goat cheese, artichoke hearts, sun-dried tomatoes---delicious!

Sorry to double post, but the drive-in restaurant with the "cheeseburgers in Paradise" is called the Sky-Way on West Market Street in Fairlawn. Drool-worthy!

    Soobee,

Sorry to disagree with you on Luigi's but I do. I think only true natives of Akron like that place. I have stopped going altogether because I have had nothing but really bad food there. I know, I know, it always wins the Beacon Journals "Best Pizza" award but I have had much better pizza, just not in Akron.

I did not know about Piattos so will have to give it a try. Thanks for that tip.

By far the best hambergs in Akron, Ohio could be found at Main Street Saloon (all you ask for is the special hamberger have them fix it their way with their toppings).
Best hotel Quality Inn Conference Center for price and stay (tripadvisor.com)
Another good place to eat with wonderfull shows is the Carousel Theatre (especially the Winter Wonderland Show)
Other good restaruants: Duffy's, Ken Stewarts, and of course my family voted my cooking by far the best :)

Have fun in Akron lots to see: All American Soap Box Derby, Pro Football Hall of Fame, Bridgestone Invitational and King James (Labron events).

Try Nick Anthe's at 1008 N Main St. It is a great long time restaurant in Akron. I have eaten there many times. Full of long time regulars. Steak and chicken are excellent. The cold bean salad served always before meals is excellent. They treat you like a regular and they remembered me the second time I went there. There is another restraunt named Anthes in the area this is not the same place. I have never eaten there.......Russhttp://travel.yahoo.com/p-reviews-15649331R-prod-travelguide-action-read-ratings_and_reviews-i;_ylt=AiOH8.lytERoWN10.llgmqcRTWoL
