Alaskan Copper River Salmon

Hey - 'Tis the season for those tasty king salmon from Alaska's Copper River. Anyone had theirs yet?

    Yumbo, I have been to Alaska several times during the various salmon runs. I am not a fan of salmon, but it sure gets the motor racing of the salmon fans of Alaska and the Pacific Northwest. Salmon is much to fishy and greasy for me and I prefer the whitefish, but I do understand the devotion of the salmon fans. They are a beautiful animal and I have observed them in the red state when they have reached the end of their journey. Unfortunately, shortly after this, they expire. Ain't it crazy that after one of life's greatest expieriences, you up and die

    When I amm in Alaska, I prefer the Halibut

    Eh, Copper River. Feh.

    Gill-netted or seined salmon handled like green industrial tomatoes. What they've got is a) a lot of fat and b) a hype machine. While a) will go a long way with me, I'm getting awfully sick of the b), when there are vastly better runs where all of the fish is line-caught (and thus better handled).

    I was at Wild Salmon (one of my favorite fish markets ever - and the best buy for a shrimp cocktail in all of the Northwest), and they had Trask River Chinook for $8.99/lb and Copper River for $15.99. The Trask River was line caught, thick and just drippy with fat, and every bit as flavorful as the Copper River, which was netted and therefore bruised. *sigh*. I asked the fish monger, and he says he can't convince people to take the Trask River (which is my favorite fishery, period). They've been led into believing that net-caught fish from 2500 miles away is superior to the stuff from 300 miles away, hand-caught and delicately handled.

    Hey Yumbo, I had mine last night! My wife and I went out and both ordered the featured fish, Wild Copper River Salmon. Fresh, very flavorful, and grilled to perfection!

    How does Copper River distinguish itself from other salmon?

    Salmon has always been a little oily to me.

    Perhaps I will get an opportunity to sample it someday.

    Salmon from Way Up North (i.e., Alaska) live in colder waters and have to build up stores of fat to stay alive. Think of a well-marbled slab of steak.

    The Clydes restaurants in the DC area are having a Copper River special throughout the month of June. Moderately priced and probably a better deal than buying and cooking it yourself.

    My wife buys Copper River Salmon from a natural foods store here while in season, I season it and grill it. Great stuff. The oil in salmon is heart healthy - eat more salmon.

    Just had copper river salmon while visiting friends in Seattle. What a delicious treat. It was briefly marinaded and grilled. I can't think of a better meal. Now, I must say, I am a salmon lover. It sure was better than the farm-raised atlantic salmon and when my hostese told me the price, I flipped.

    The last time I had fresh salmon, was in the early "60"s. Fresh caught out of the Russian River, with my dad. I still love it to this day, no matter what the price. Fish was gutted ,butter onions and lemon guarters were added, wrapped in tinfoil, then cooked. The river is in Alaska.

    Amen to line caught salmon! Vibeguy-you are so right about the Trask.I have spent a lot of time in Seattle and environs and eaten quite abit of each and always felt the Copper River fish was over rated as well as way over priced. The comparison to the "fresh" green tomatoe is also right on.
