I am going to take a stab at bumping this thread up. I am headed to Anchorage (and, most likely, ONLY Anchorage) for a couple of days in December. I will probably rent a car, but since I am not big on driving around in the snow, I will likely not venture too far from the hotel and whatever other appointed route I have while in town. So...the recommendations I would need are specifically for Anchorage. Looking for halibut (fish and chips), salmon, crab... I'll take recs for an exceptional burger, if there is one.... Since I have managed to enjoy some of the "exotic" meats, such as those found at Biker Jim's place in Denver (elk, reindeer), I would be interested to know a few places that might offer something along those lines.... Desserts, maybe? I wouldn't think Anchorage would be a big ice cream eating town in December....but, pies, cakes, novelty items.... Easy/must-see things to do - again, I likely won't have time to take a train to the coast or climb Mt McKinley - but, if there is something cool, peculiar, unique - or just fun in Anchorage, I am all ears. Lastly, I have been informed by some of the others in my traveling party, that I will be partaking in the consumption of "Moose Drool," which, by all accounts, seems to be the locally-made beer. I am all for wacky-named things, and Moose Drool certainly sounds like something I would want to drink excessively - but, any other suggestions for a good, local brew would be welcomed, as well. Thanks in advance for your help!

Actually Moose Drool is from Big Sky Brewing in Billings, Montana. Moose Drool It is shipped to many states including Minnesota. There are some local brew pubs in Anchorage. It's been 9 years since I was there so my info would not be up to date but I remember the brews were pretty good. Salmon, Halibut, Elk and Reindeer can be had just about anywhere.

Play27 I was watcing DDD last night and I wondered, "what does reindeer taste like?" It tastes like caribou. Actually reindeer is generally referred to (but not totally true) as the domesticated and herded caribou. Caribou and Reindeer are essentially the same animal.

Others are more expert than I am; my experience of Alaska is limited to a few weeks in the Summer of 2009. I would try a reindeer sausage. The sausages I met were more pork than reindeer, but they had a spicy, meaty taste that I quite enjoyed. We went to the Alaska Native Heritage Center, and really found it fascinating. We especially enjoyed the demonstrations of native dancing, storytelling, and athletics. I would definitely recommend it. Alaska Wild Berries is a gift shop that features the world's largest chocolate fountain. This may or may not be intriguing enough for you to visit; if not, I don't think you need visit for other reasons.

I agree with reindeer meat in the sausage form, I tried it in a burger in Fairbanks but it was too dry but the sausage was pretty good. Look for some great fresh seafood in Anchorage. Alaska Kind Crab! Anchorage Museum of History and Art is pretty interesting and we did go see some exhibits at the University as well.
