Well, it is now 2008 and some of the bigger ideas in my previous posts of last year have lost their luster due to high gas prices and a declining economy.

Since the Capital District has a rich history in the mini hot dog, perhaps it should be a mini tour of people in the area visiting the classic places. The Capitol Building carts should also be visited as they are interesting in themselves. Of course everyone should be invited to join, but I don't think that many people would travel too far for such a limited tour.

I would be happy to join in with a mini meet and greet tour in this area with anyone that attends. Prime time would probably be August during the Saratoga season, when people travel to this area for the races, anyway.

Just some updated ideas King...keep us informed.

August is tough for me, I have three weekends slated plus the Hudson Valley Rib Fest is the weekend of August 16th, in New Paltz.

I was thinking of after the Sept tour?

Well, it's your show HDK, so September it will be as far as I'm concerned. Maybe I'll see you at the Rib Fest - I always go on Saturday and have had a chance to meet some of the competitors - many of whom are quite generous sharing some of their product. Also, with the exception of McDaniel, most of the food booths are mediocre at best (well, Elias, the Highland butcher, makes a passable Texas style BBQ if that sweet tomato based sauce is what you like. Hickory was pretty good but something has gone wrong with that outfit in the past two years and they are putting out pretty bad stuff now-a-days.

October 4 sounds good to me, we'll probably be going to the Finger Lakes about October 14 - 17.
And Dallas Hot Wieners seems like a good place to meet as there's a municipal parking lot a few doors away.

HDK: How about if you start a new thread for this proposed tour? It is disconcerting and confusing to have your latest posting way back at the top of page one just ahead of postings from 2007.

You can add Gail to your list - we are looking forward to an area unknown to us even though it is only an hours drive away.

Cheers, John

HDK

While researching the places your planning to go to sounds like your
not only going to get good dogs, but a great History lesson. I spent
over an hour reading the write ups of each place. I would love to make
the trip, but I don't think I could convince my girlfriend to change
vacation plans.

Good Luck

Are we on for October 4? If so, do we have a time or meeting place?

Walt: Gail and I are planning to go and so are Brooklyn Bill and Ginny. If the tour has fallen by the wayside we could still all individually meet at one of the Troy joints and proceed from there - although it would behelpful to have a local guide...

I wish I could be there, I was raised on Hog Dog Charleys and Famous Lunch dogs with zippy sauce. Just heard the Troy Pork Store is no longer in business. I think HelmBolds still is.
I wonder if Jimmys is still on Congress st. they also had a good dog, I think Jimmy worked for Famous.
While in Troy you might want to check out DeFazio's Pizza, Testo's In Lansingburg and Ted's Fish Fry.
One other place that used to be a good roadfood place was Burkes South End Tavern in South Troy - Corned Beef sandwhiches great.
Have fun in the Home of Uncle Sam.

Hi all; no one has mentioned Hot Dog Heaven, on Lark Street in Albany. Awsome Sabrett's dogd (both l'il and big) with a tasty meat sauce. Also, their burgers are great.

Well, welcome to Roadfood Prov. The tour did take place and was enjoyed by everyone according to all accounts. Yet it was not an Albany tour. Perhaps, it should not have been pegged as a hot dog tour as on Lark Street alone, great food abounds in every category you care to name.

Nearby, in the Summer, street vendors abound around the Capitol building selling dogs as well as many other things. I think a food tour of your neighborhood in Summer would be delightful.

People could park in the Empire State Plaza and do it all just by walking. Even if people get rather full with eating they can fill their minds with one of the best art collections on the planet at the ESP or visit the adjacent NYS Museum.

This would be a tour worth driving to since they can park and walk everywhere and have an incredible time. What do you think, Prov?

Greyghost: Are those hot dog vendors ( and others) there when the Legislature is out of session? If they are . a walking tour in Summer would be great although it wouldn't be bad in the Spring even when they are in session because I don't think they meet on weekends. And it would be fun to visit the art and museum exhibits between hot dogs... Who's ready and willing to set p the tour?

Cheers, John
