I'm sure several of us have those photos, but we aren't that far yet. Pine Club was certainly my favorite meal of the trip, so I am anxiously awaiting also......

Sorry Lisa, these things take time. And there is nobody on here slower at posting their reports than me. They are going much faster than I typically do. Besides, have seen just how many places Danny and Gregg hit that day?

Well I'm waiting for this trip report to conclude so I can post about Buffalo, and then work in reverse and post my Virginia trip report that took place before everything else!

Re:All Roads Lead To Cincinnati 2014/04/23 11:17:46 (permalink)
Thursday, April 10th (continued):
Danny and I strapped in as we departed Crabill's for our appointment with destiny! We had about a 50 minute drive to make our 5:45pm goal of arriving 15 minutes early...just in case.

To fully set the stage...Buddy and Mrs Roadhouse have now departed St. Elmo's in Indianapolis, buffetbuster and Wandering Jew have picked up Cousin Johnny in Columbus, Ralph and Lori Melton (Ice Cream Chick) have departed their last food stop and are heading though Columbus and Michael Hoffman & lleechef are picking up Ed Sails arriving from California and into Columbus! WOW - I think I got it right!

Danny and I pull into Henry's in West Jefferson, Ohio. Located just west of Columbus, it sits all alone on a desolate stretch of highway made grayer by the fact that the nearby fields had not yet been plowed, which would eventually provide some much needed color to the area.

After stretching and a few outdoor photos, we headed in. As our eyes grew accustomed to the light, I did a double take...and got one right back! There in booth just in front of me was Ralph and Lori, who just happened to hit Henry's without any knowledge of our rendezvous! What a great surprise! And they were eating pie!

After a little small talk, we grabbed a big table right next to them and let the staff know the Mobile Pie Orderers had arrived!!! Less than ten minutes later, in walks buffetbuster flanked by the pie security tag team of Wandering Jew and Cousin Johnny...and a new member of the posse, Big BoyBuffetbuster let me know that the other threesome was delayed at the Columbus airport, so we gave the word to our gracious and friendly waitress to...Bring On The Pie! Here's a first look...

Clearly excited, buffetbuster broke out in song at the top of his lungs...To All The Pies I've Loved Before! Security went out the window and a general free-for-all broke out with several of us suffering fork wounds to the back surface of the hands! Crust was flying in all directions! Dangerous work this Roadfooding! I'll let the posse describe the flavors but our advance order system did result in us getting a slice of several sold out selections!

CTD, you are too funny, I could swear I was there. Did you all come in spurs a-jingling and guns drawn? When you described the surroundings, I heard the cicadas and Steinbecks' tortoise. Hark, is that theme music? You're terrific. Ever thought of script writing?

We had tried and failed to find Henry's once, years ago, so I was keen to try to visit it on this drive. (We'd spent the time between Mehlman and Henry's at the Container Store in Columbus, because we don't have one at Pittsburgh.)

This is the sort of sedate pictures we took by ourselves:
Henry's by Ralph Melton, on Flickr
Henry's by Ralph Melton, on Flick (I think this picture shows off the flakiness of the crust well)
Henry's by Ralph Melton, on Flickr (the butterscotch pie was much better than the cherry)

And then as we were finishing, we looked up to see ChiTownDiner and Danny come in, followed a few minutes later by buffetbuster, wanderingjew, and Cousin Johnny. And, well, it turned into a pie bacchanal...

In reference to your Country Pride review, has anyone noticed this phenomenon of "sugar free" cherry pie -- specifically, cherry pie? On my travels in the last year, I've seen it in many restaurants where they don't serve "sugar" cherry pie -- the only option is "sugar free." And often, it is the only variety of "sugar free" pie offered.

"Real" cherry pie is my favorite kind, but I shy away from a "sugar free" version. There has to be some kind of sweetener in it, because sour red cherries are much too tart for most people's taste (though I love them). But what is that sweetener, and how does the pie taste?

I can help with this! I'm in between pie gigs right now, but I made a lot of sugar-free cherry pies at the last pie shop. So, yes, there is sweetener...Splenda, in my case. That was the preferred choice of my customers, and a more natural flavor than any of the other artificial sweeteners. Cherry was undoubtedly the most popular...the difference in taste between the regular and sugar-free versions is least noticable in a cherry pie, although I can fool you with my sugar-free apple too. Texture issues spoil sugar-free versions of custard pies, so I wasn't as successful with those.

CTD and Ralph have already posted great pie photos, but I thought it would be worthwhile to see this entire murderer's row that would make the '27 Yankees jealous!

Cherry Pie

Apple Pie

Peach Pie

Blackberry Pie

Coconut Cream Pie

Banana Cream Pie

Peanut Butter Pie

Butterscotch Pie

I think because I have been to Henry's so many times that the quality of their pies is taken for granted and they shouldn't be. They were truly excellent this day, with the peanut butter and apple being my standouts. Truthfully, there wasn't a loser in the bunch.

Here is a shot of WJ, CTD and Ralph taking their pie photos,

one with a regular camera, one with a tablet and one with a phone. What I really like about this photo is Lori in the background, who has already had her pie and has clearly moved on. Now, if we were in an ice cream shop.....

Peanut butter seems to be a flavor they don't carry very often. This may have been the first time I had seen it. Apparently, they do have it on Thursdays.
