All Roads Lead to the 'Burgh

Tuesday, May 6
We had tickets to the Pirates/Giants game for Wednesday.  Left a day early and the first stop was at one of our favorite places, Brady's Run Grille in New Brighton.

Trish had a pint of Smithwick's waiting for MH and she made me one of her signature Bloody Marys.

We had a light lunch, anticipating having dinner at Primanti Bros.  I had a "side salad".......I would hate to see a "real salad"!

MH had a hot sausage sandwich with peppers, onions, marinara and provolone.  I had a bite and the sausage was delicious.

After lunch we checked into our motel.  Never did make it to Primanti's because we were just plain tired.  Ate at a place called Central Diner and Grille.  It was OK.
More to come...............

Trish poured my Smithwicks (a Guinness product) in a Guinness glass because it's a true pint. The sausage sandwich was terrific. They have it made for them by a local supplier. I had liver and onions at Central Diner and it was very good, and there was lots of it. lleechef had their sole, and she said it was really good. And while the food at Central Diner was good our waitress was fabulous.

Game day!  Thunderstorms between 5 and 6AM, then rain.  It was not looking good.  But the weather cooperated and it turned out to be hot and sunny!

Don't ask me what this is but it's called the Pierogi Run.  Only in Pittsburgh.

Of course the mighty Buccos beat the Giants 4-3 and the Jolly Roger is raised as the Parrot joins the team!

Great pics and report so far, lleechef. MH's sandwich does look absolutely delicious---I could eat one right now! And as far as your salad goes, I see why you weren't that hungry for Primanti's----those croutons look more like Tater Tots! Definitely an intereting idea of a "side salad".

I'm just not sure you actually went to a Buc's game, though. With the Parrot and the Jolly Roger----are you sure you didn't make a left turn at a Jimmy Buffett concert?

Enough of baseball.......time to get serious and talk about food!
After the game we met buffetbuster, Ralph Melton and his wife, icecreamchick for dinner at Tessoro's.  I had the blue cheese bacon burger with potato salad.

No trip to the 'Burgh would be complete without a stop in the Strip District!  There are so many good places but Pennsylvania Macaroni Company has to be one of my favorites.
    The salumi

    The olives

    And, oh, all that cheese!

Then it was time to head over to Wholey's for lunch and have a famous fish sandwich.

One more stop before we headed home...........

Yep.  Prantl's Bakery for "The Best Cake in America"......the famous "Burnt Almond Torte".  It was everything I hoped it would be........and more.

Then, sadly, we had to leave the beautiful rolling hills of Pennsylvania and come back to corn country.

Here you go CTD....the almonds are mixed with some kind of crunchy sugar, held onto the cake with buttercream.  The inside is just plain yellow cake with a very small amount of buttercream between the two layers.  It really is perfect and not too sweet.

Lisa, you and I have similar tastes in Tessaro's Burgers.  They are among the best I've ever had, and the Blue Cheese Bacon version is probably my favorite.

I had looked at the menu online and that combination seemed great........then Ralph said it was his favorite.  It truly was a great burger.  I will drag MH to Chicago in search of more burger renditions.  In the mean time........I guess we'll have to eat broiled chicken breasts with your HS&T sauce.........

If lleechef doesn't mind, I am going to add a few more photos from Tessaro's.  Both Lisa and Ralph got the identical blue cheese and bacon burger.

You can get the blue cheese either dry or creamy and there is no wrong choice here.  Thanks to Lisa for sharing her fine potato salad with me.

Here is Michael's burger cut in half, showing off the juiciness.

    Was that medium rare Michael?

I don't have a set order here, usually rotating through several different combinations.  On this day, I went with the bbq bacon burger,

with cheddar and home fries on the side.  Like Michael said, the well seasoned home fries are excellent!

Lori got what I think was called a hamburger salad,

but was actually more a steak salad.  This was enough to make me think I need to come back and order a steak someday.

Thanks bb for the additional photos!  You are more patient than I am when it comes to taking pictures.......I just want to dig in!!  But those home fries were definitely the best I ever tasted as I ate some off the plate of bb ......MH ate all the potatoes and left a small bit of his MR burger.  I, on the other hand, devoured my burger and left a small amount of potato salad.

Mr. Hoffman I was worried there for a bit when I saw what was purported to be a "Smidicks" in a Guinness pint. Thank you for the explanation. One must have the proper glass to draw the perfect pint. As to Wholey's fish sandwich. It is probably the best on this side of the pond.

Agreed. Bobbi & I are ready to drive to Pittsburgh just to get steaks at Tessaro's. Considering how good their burgers are, I'd venture that their steaks are excellent.

That's one impressive olive collection!  What fun.

And I'm glad to get a look inside Prantl's burnt almond cake, since the one out here in San Jose is so delicious.  The cake out here is a bit thicker, possibly uses sponge cake, plus some food coloring in the frosting.  Would love to be able to taste them side by side.

Thanks for sharing your trip, even though the Pirates beat the Giants.
