Allen & Son is the restaurant of the day, today, March 12.

The review notes three locations but doesn't make a distinction between the three, which is important.

I'm not sure there are still three locations, in fact, as I have never been to the one in Graham and I think it may have been closed several years ago. I could be wrong about that.

The key thing to know is that the Chapel Hill and Pittsboro locations are under different ownership and Chapel Hill is the place you want to go as they still cook the bbq using wood. Pittsboro has been a gasser for many years, I believe.

The review really needs to be updated if the Sterns review these threads.

Only the Chapel Hill and Pittsboro locations are listed in the phone book. Don't know about Graham, either.

IMHO, the Chapel Hill and Pittsboro locations are slightly different. Chapel Hill is a bit juicier, maybe more sauce. Pittsboro is drier; you can eat a sandwich in the car while driving and not have it drip down your shirt.

But I think both are very good, wood or not. I certainly don't have any problem going to the Pittsboro location, and judging from the number or cars and truck parked there, neither do the overflow crowds every lunchtime.

The Graham location closed many years ago. It was a favorite of mine during my time at Elon. (Along with Huey's and Hursey's) Brentk is correct regarding ownership and fuel.

Allen & sons is inconsistent. One day they will be among the best, and the next below mediocre. BUT when they're good, they are really good.

I live 30 minutes away... and I plan to stay 30 minutes away. I't always got a bit of a burnt flavor to it. Last time was bad enough we ditched it and went to Barbeque Lodge in North Raleigh at Mini city.
            My 2 cents....

I have found Allen & Sons to be a problem because you have smooze the waitress. I want a little outside but not too much and my isn't that a nice walk? I like just a bit more slaw than usual and how is everyone today. Don't do it and no telling what will be placed in front of you. BBQ Center in Lexington is not as bad but sure is close..."Could I have the warm sauce please".

Stamey's in Greensboro is "Chopped w/ pups and slaw". Bridges in Shelby is the same...order and you get it.
