We ate at a very nice boarding house type place where we had an all you can eat lunch for a reasonable price sitting at communal tables. Sorry, can't remember the name, but I think it has been reviewed on these boards and it is , I think, in the original "Roadfood" book. Also, we had excellent rock shrimp at a restaurant on the island. Cheers, John

seafarer john- The place you are speaking of is probably the Florida House Inn. As of my last visit, in 2005, they no longer had the boardinghouse meals. Try T-Ray's Burger Station inside an old gas station for a really good Roadfood burger.

Up the road a piece in the town of Yulee is Jinright's Seafood House (at least it used to be there), which has fantastic fried seafood. Good gator tail too.

I will be going to Amelia Island in mid June, and have semi planned where to eat. My friend leaves it up to me, as she has no clue since her dining experiences were limited to cooking and eating meals when camping at Fort Clinch with children several years ago. I think we might try my old stand by Barbara Jeans, T Rays Burger Station, Moon River Pizza, Ciao Bistro Italian, Mariners (I think that is the name), and maybe a few others. I had a great meal a few years ago at the hotel in downtown St. Mary's, so we might stop there for lunch on Saturday on the way home after looking around St. Mary's a bit. I have found Jinright's to be okay in Brunswick, so guess the same can be said for the one near Amelia Island.

I can now say that I have eaten at T-Ray's. I went on a Friday so I could sample the fried shrimp, and I must say that they were some of the best shrimp that I have ever eaten. I got there at 11 before they opened at 11:30, so sat a few minutes drinking my tea before looking at the menu. Someone asked the waitress how many shrimp were on the plate, and the waitress said 9 or 10 depending on the size of the shrimp. I placed my order, and remarked that I did not have my camera with me, so I could not take pix to post on Roadfood. The cook looked at me when I said that, and when I received my plate of shrimp it contained 12 or 13 large shrimp. The accompaniments were good, which included some yummy hush puppies, steak fries and cole slaw. I ordered a cheese burger to go, and even after heating it up later, it was quite tasty. Barbara Jean's provided me with my crab cake and she crab soup fix, although the turnip greens were not fresh and totally tasteless. I discovered an Italian restaurant named Tony's in the shopping center that contains Publix, and enjoyed their lasagna special at lunch ($5.99 and enough for 2 hungry people, fettucine alfredo and awesome garlic bread knots) Harris Teeter grocery store provided me with tasty sushi (the sushi chef prepared it for me while I waited).

I wonder if Strickland's is still around. Some of the best seafood I've ever had.

This is the only Harris Teeter in Florida left according to a story I just read. I like them. We went to one in Charlotte and one in Blowing Rock. The story said it is very unusual to have a chaoin with ony one location in a state.
