American cheese pizza

A new trend in NYC is to put anything and everything on pizza.

Today I saw a "regular" slice (tomato) with 2 slices of American Cheese on top. What do you think of doing pizza with American or Cheddar?

Is that the only cheese on the pizza? Here in WI I've been in places that offer a blend of mozzarella and an orange cheese (usually cheddar but I suppose some might use American) on some but not all pizzas.

Having grown up in Cincinnati, our famous local chain LaRosas (one of the largest independant chains in the U.S.) has always used provalone exclusively on their pies. In combination with their sweet, ever so slightly spicy sauce, it is to die for.

As far as I could see, it was the only cheese. The thing was a mess, just these large squares of american cheese laid randomly on the top of the pie, covering at least 1/2 the pie. You couldn't see what was under it. The thing that suprised me is that in Manthattan, you don't have to resort to desperate measures to make pizza...

There is an Italian bakery here in South Jersey and Philly called Cacia's that sells pizza by the square slice and one variety is a white pizza with american cheese and thin slices of tomato. It's pretty good, a nice occassional change from the regular.

I can't, I have to have mine shipped to FLA, unless the few times I have been back. But like all regional favorites, they can ship to you, well not sure about China.....but check it out.

The cheddar pie looks good. American cheese aside(sort of a grilled cheese pizza,I guess)other cheeses work fine. Once, in Amsterdam, I had a delicious pizza, and asked how it was made. They used gouda cheese. When I make pizza today, sometimes,I'll put Gouda on it...gives it a slight golden color...and it's delicious!

On occasion, when I'm cooking for a crowd and making 4 pizzas, I'll make one where I cover the skin with one layer of thin slices of Boar's Head White American before spreading the sauce. The rest is done normally with mozz and toppings (sometimes ground beef). The flavor of this added cheese isn't that noticeable (at least to me), but the "mouth-feel" is much creamier. Some folks really like this version. It's all good. pb

I'll agree.Texture changes, but often, especially with a milder cheese, the change in taste in negligible! The Gouda addition I talked about above, doesn't make a major noticable change.

California Pizza Kitchen uses smoked Gouda on their famous BBQ Chicken Pizza. I have made a homemade version of this pie, including the gouda, which brings all the flavors together and melts well

The one thing I notice with the pizzas in Italy is that Italians will put almost anything on a pizza...as long as it is a quality ingredient, anything goes...poached eggs, various cheeses, potatoes, all kinds of mushrooms,peppers,hard-biled eggs, escarole, spinanch and the like, etc etc. But what is ion the counter is quality...from dough to sauce to cheese...the worst pizza in italy I ever had was 100% better than most chain pizza here!I've been to Italy many times. and do my pizza tour every time,so I think I've tried a good honest sample of places!!!

Well ther's a few, but the exact place I am discussing in on the corner of 14th St & 6th Ave. And I don't think they really are Italian,Spanish maybe. They also have Ziti Pizza (Ziti on Pizza) and other wierd combos.
Check it out (visually that is, save the $)

I"m not proud about the kind of cheese I put on my pizzas, as long as it is good cheese all by itself.. I've often used a combo of mozz and american for my cheeseburger pizza.. instead of pizza sauce I use a combination of mustard and ketchup.. add ground beef, onions, pickles and bacon, and you have a pizza with a real cheeseburger flavor.

didn't one of the delivery chains offer a bacon cheeseburger pizza a while back. I would have to think the chains would have opted for american over cheddar. And if they used a cheddar, I'm sure they used such a mild cheddar that it might as well been american.

Seriously, to my taste, cheddar/American cheese does not go with Italian tomato sauce flavors.

As someone noted up-thread, maybe on a "cheeseburger" pizza. Not what I am looking for in a pizza, but I would eat it if it were well prepared.

The American cheese slices on regular pizza sounds SICK. However, I have had some "pizza" with american or cheddar featured in it, like cheeseburger pizza or mexican pizza. I don't really consider those real pizza, however. In fact, I have rarely had good pizza in America. The best I ever had was a square piece of pizza in Rome, with just fresh tomato sauce and mozzarella. I was eight years old and I still remember it!

I have made pizzas with cheddar cheese but then I would use a BBQ sauce instead of a traditional pizza tomato sauce along with chicken or pork tenderloin for the meat.

I kind of like Jennifer 4's pizza cheeseburger idea. It might be worth trying.

There are a lot of very good pizza shops in America making Neapolitan woodfired pizzas with minimal but quality ingredients. You just have to know where to find them. I think most Americans think they are getting cheated with a simple Margherita pizza. They think you have to gob on the ingredients to get your money's worth. Taste means little.

I love a great wood oven Margherita pizza...there is one good pizzeria here, Pizzeria Italia, owned by actual italians. It's simple and great with a thin, crispy crust that's still soft inside. I can't STAND doughy, greasy crust or deep dish pizza!

    Porcelina,

No one is MORE critical of pizza than me! I've spent 6 decades eating my favorite food throughout Europe and America. Both make great pizza and bad.Italy makes some of the very best...but so does America. It's just that many Americans are willing to settle for less...or we've grown up liking something many pizza people wouldn't call "pizza". Yes,Pizza Hut Et all should be known for selling a "Sweet dough with sweet red stuff" product, but that's not to say many great establishments across America don't produce a superior product.
Having said that, yes, there are locations and areas of our great land that are a wasteland of pizza...but don't give up hope. maybe a New Yorker will move to your area(as one did where my Mom lives out west) and open up a place that sells the real thing!!

Lee, you can always use the little edit pincel.

A Hard Biled egg comes from a Hard Biled duck. Soft Biled eggs are layed by Soft Biled ducks. And, for the very best Biled Eggs... feed the ducks Bay Corn!
