An Interesting Take

Some might find this article interesting. I certainly do, but then perhaps it has something to do with the fact that my grandson wrote it. His only connection with roadfood is his enjoyment of Wholey's fish sandwiches and Primanti Brothers everything sandwiches, plus having hit some places in the El Paso and Las Cruces areas that have been featured on Roadfood. He's also eaten at some mom-and-pop type places in Iraq, but I've not seen any reviews of those.

Outstanding article!  I really liked what he had to say.  Michael, he seems to have inherited your writing ability.  How did he end up choosing Pitt to attend?

    Thanks for posting this.

Thanks Cliff. I'm pretty proud of him. His first paid piece was something he wrote for an Ohio newspaper -- the Warren Tribune Chronicle. It was about his trip to Australia and New Zealand when he was in high school here.

He chose Pitt because his best friend, a guy from Kansas, got his undergrad degree and is now in grad school there. They're sharing an apartment in Squirrel Hill. His other reason for choosing Pitt is a teacher he had in high school who was a cornerback at Pitt.

Well, I'm glad he is here in Pittsburgh and apparently enjoying the local food.  Best of luck to him.

It's a well written piece, but it reads more like an introduction to a longer work.  He makes some excellent observations, but then, just as he gets into the meat of the matter, the article comes to an abrupt end. It almost seems like the article is written as the answer to a specific question that we the reader are not privy to.  Any insight into that Michael?

I think he should write more along this theme and explore his experiences in the military.  It could be a revealing piece for people on both sides of the political equation.

    Good stuff.  Do more.

    Michael,
You can be very proud of that young man. A well written piece.
    On another note:
You should suggest he keep a log book of the number of Hot Dogs he eats from "The Dirty O"! during the course of his College years. Orders of Fries too! Then he can write a piece on how College life destroyed his digestive system!

An interesting article by a man that seems to be wise beyond his years. It definitely left me wanting to hear more. You have reason to be very proud, Michael. I seldom come into contact with any of our soldiers and, if I did, I doubt that I'd go out of my way to strike up a conversation. My attitude probably stems from my own experience of military service from 1966-1970. When traveling in uniform and spending too much time in airports, the last thing I would have wanted was to get in a conversation with someone about the war in Viet Nam. I just wanted to be left alone. Lately, I have wondered how soldier's feel about what's been going here at home while they're off in some hell-hole of a country risking their lives for a purpose that is most likely hard for them to comprehend (much like Viet Nam). Specifically, I wonder if they are aware of and their feelings about the Oath Keepers organization. To me, it seems to be a natural extension of the sense of duty they had when they enlisted, but in matters like this, I have been very wrong more than once. I would be most interested in what this thoughtful young man thinks about it.

Thanks to all for the nice comments. I am, indeed, proud of the guy.
Buddy: It's my understanding that it came about, as you suggested, from questions.

Here are a couple more of my grandson's latest pieces. Beware! Strippers and very adult language involved.

He's got strong potential, but his overuse of words underscores his youth.  As he gets older and more practiced, I expect he will become a top notch writer.

Somehow i missed this earlier. Your grandson writes well and was a pleasure to read. Also my son's good friend for the last decade is in the army and has for the last couple been in the same division your grandson was in when your grandson was in the army.

Thanks for the kind words. I'm proud of him. Ryan was in the 2nd Infantry Division when he was in Korea, and his combat engineers battalion was attached to the 1st Infantry Division in Iraq. It was the Ist Armored from July of 2010 till January.
