Annoying Email from Roadfood Site Wed, 09/24/03 4:20 PM (permalink)
As much as I enjoy the site I am very disappointed in getting 30 emails just this morning from Roadfood perple concerning my post at
Where to eat now. I am new to the site and I am sure I did not give permission to give my email address out. I have contacted the webmaster several times today with no success. I am still getting emails. I have unsubscribed, logged out etc. Hate to leave Roadfood behind but this is not fun.Webmaster--do you read you email?

I agree I only get the newsletter from the site, however once I accidentally hit the subscribe button for a topic ( I think it was breakfast) & then you do get an e:mail everytime a message is posted to that topic. Check all of the topic boards & make sure you are not subscribed to any of them.

Are these all emails telling about someone elses post in a forum---like maybe one busy one?---sound to me like your "subscribed"--thats the only way i ever get email from here---its used when you want to keep track of a specific forum----

You can get bombarded if you click "subscribe to this topic". It is best just to check in periodically instead of hitting the "Subscribe" unless you want to be notified every time there is a new post to that topic.

Well, I have learned one thing from this...I never knew about the "subscribe" button! And thought for an instant it might be a good thing. Guess not.

I do have one question while we're on "website" do's and possible don't want to's. Can you print one persons single post, say someone posts a recipe you like, or must you just print the whole page?

Good question Rusty - I have just copied a recipe and pasted it into wordperfect to print.

I also used to used word and paste--not any more---get yourself a copy of "Mastercook"---GREAT recipe program---lets you import stuff easily, assemble your own cookbooks, export recipes---its really a godsend--i visit several recipe sites--mostly in yahoo groups--and most of the folks that i run into there are crazy about it and once i tried it i agree-i cannot reccomend this program to highly--its really terrific and i havent found one thing about it that i dont like>

Think I can convince my boss to let me install it here at work????? My computer at home isn't worthy of tearing apart and making a portable grill out of the hard drive case! I cannot for the life of me to convince my husband it's a piece of c-rap! It's not even in use, hasn't been for about a year. In fact there is so much junk on my computer table you can barely see the darn thing. Whew, thanks! I feel better now.

I once accidentally and unknowingly hit or checked "subscribe to this topic" (not even realizing there was such an animal), and like lamertz thought I would go crazy with emails until someone kindly informed me of the likely problem, so am sure that is source of his/her Roadfood email flood. I've always found Lonestar's suggestion of "copy and paste" (or "cut and paste") to be one of a computer's most useful features, whether it's copying/printing a Roadfood recipe or any item from any computer source or working upon any computer document.

You should be able to just select the recipe (hold down ctrl while moving cursor over area to be printed, if recipe is long just drag cursor down page), then go to print, choose print selection only, & that's all that will print out. No cut & paste necessary. You may have to go to the drop down menu under file to get your printer to print a selected piece.

I have to admit, I don't mind the subscriptions at all. A much nicer way to fill my email than the usual:"Become a Chickmagnet" "Enlarge your Whiz Wang" and "Xgqvwyjoinus". I at least know the names of the respondents from Roadfood. Also....it's kind of neat to run and see who replied what.(ok.....I have no life)

                                  Dearfolk,
Just today, I received an e-mail from someone I hadn't heard from or seen in over 15 years, and it was a joy to reconnect: she ran back into me here, and checked for my e-mail address. There are also a few of you out there that I know beyond here, having met you at one time or another, and at one place or space or another, in the flesh.
While I don't usually have the time to read all of the monthly send-out from the office, I do manage to get through most of it, and enjoy a goodly portion of that. It is no bother to me to recieve it, unless I happen to be really short on time and have something therein that I want to read, but no time to do it.
Also, I've received a few personal e-mails from y'all, and not a one of them has been the least bit bothersome. But neither did I subscribe to any topic: my e-mail account's little tummy would fill up with idle chatter that I can just as easily read here - sort of like if I ate a whole box of saltines (OOF!) instead of The Normaltown Cafe''s squash casserole (Fridays only).
Anyhow, enough rambling. I got more topic waves to go surf. Lemme wax down my board and get to my woodie before the termites devour it.

                                  P. S. Surfing is somewhat difficult here in pathetically landlocked Athens, Georgia.

I'm a new face here at Roadfood and not subscribed, but I, too, would not mind e-mail from the fine opined folks here on the website instead of the usual as you mentioned unmentionables. I also find it hard to remember where I or someone asked a question and either wanted the answer for myself or was curious about what the answer might be. getting old has that effect, (memory loss) subscribing, e-mails and all, would help me remember where I have commented etc etc

I agree. I figured out the subscribe/unsubscribe option soon after registering at this site. It's the perfect device for me to keep track of any topics that I am particularly interested in, especially since I don't always have the time or opportunity to check in every day. If the emails get to be too much, I just unsubscribe again. Thanks, webmaster, for a good time control tool.

Hey Ort! Paula here! Hope I didn't add to your inbox overload.

I didn't subscribe to any particular email list (I hope) - and haven't seen anything in my inbox yet - so I guess I'm o.k.

Anyway, I don't travel much by car (at least on trips over 4 hours), but I'm finding the conversation here interesting. I, too, enjoy interesting cuisine, and if anyone is coming to the Frankfort/Lexington Bluegrass area of Kentucky, please feel free to email me or post a note for me here.

And ORT. - how's the world in Athens?

ocdreamr, was pleased to read your recommendation for printing just a section of a topic, but then was disappointed when attempted and discovered it didn't work on my Mac. In doing some reading then, believe that (or some very similar) method works with both earlier and the most recent Mac OS but not with the system I'm running. Did discover another means of accomplishing this task with which was not familiar, but to me it was not as quick and easy as "copy and paste" so I'll just stick with that until make some changes.

As for the "subscribe" feature, I'm surely glad that Roadfood offers it for all who find it desirable and useful, but I'm also glad that it has the "on and off" switch, as my one (accidental) experince with it to date was that as previously mentioned by Hillbilly and me. With the "off and on" feature, it provides the best of all worlds. And I do enjoy the monthtly Roadfood email newsletter.

HURRAY! It works ocdreamr. I have to admit though when I first tried your suggestion I did not choose "print selection"(never used it before), and of course I got everything again. I hadn't completed my a.m.. Pepsi at the time. Now I've tried it again and and happy to say it works. Thanks!

Is there a way to "un-subscribe" from a topic? I have not looked but I am sure it must be posable...

Late night in Charleston SC. Working, but not too hard. I came upon this site and was pleasantly surprised. Sounds like intelligent folks talking about food. OK! Regional specialities are a plus. Would welcome all.
