Another Brand of Dogs

My wife and I were shopping tonight at a local bulk food store. They have all the typical bulk food store stuff- lunch meat, cheese, spices, etc. Everything, or most everything is really good. The owner is extremely picky, especially about the lunch meat and cheese. There was an article in the Town paper about how picky he was about lunch meat. He was looking for a source for a certain lunch meat, and he tried meat from (I forget the actual number, but it was ridiculously high!) many different wholesalers, until he found the one(s) that he felt were good enough to be sold at his store! It had been about a month since our last visit to his store. We walked in the door, said "Hi", and before I finished saying "Hello", I heard my wife say: Honey- (She's sweet that way!) look, natural-casing wieners! He told us that he had just gotten them in today! They were pork and beef natural-casing dogs from the fairly local Amish country, made in Walnut Creek, Ohio. They were only $3.19 lb. We bought a package of almost 2 lbs. They also had NC dogs called "super-dogs", or some such thing, made in the same place. They were $3.29 lb, and were app 5&1/2" in girth, and app 7-8" in length! Talk about pen...I mean hot dog envy! Of course, already having had dinner plans, we weren't able to try these new dogs tonight, but I can't wait to bite into one! I asked the proprietor if the manufacturer had the same brand of dogs in all-beef, and he is going to check with his supplier, and let me know! The pork&beef dogs we got tonight a have slightly bigger girth and length than any we've tried to date. Also, the spices, etc, are much more visible on the surface of these dogs than any other we've tried. I'm anxious to try them, and will post our opinions and results here. We even bought a jar of Claussen relish to go with them!

I grilled the new dogs the other night, and while they are better than your run-of-the-mill dogs, I was disappointed. The next door neighbors were over, and this was the first time they had anything better than B*llp*rk, S*g*rd*le, etc, and the first time they had natural casing dogs. They loved them, and given their point of reference, I'd think so, too. There are several dogs I've tried that I liked much better, such as Five Star, Usinger's, and dogs made at a local meat market. However, at $3.19 per pound, and so close to home, they'll do in a pinch. The spices were not very prevalant, in spite of being so visible under the casing. Also, they seemed to be mushier than other NC dogs. Oh well, live and learn.
