Another Electrical DAQ Tue, 06/14/11 12:07 PM (permalink)
Ok guys I didn't want to hijack  Jtetterton's thread.  But here is another DAQ ( dumb ass question) for the experienced on this board about electrical and generators.
To refresh most folks memory, I am totally electric, gong to convert most heavy hitters over to propane.
But I have a 100 amp panel box with one very thick and heavy cord attached.  Four wires.
My plan is to put a 50 amp plug on the end.  (is this Wise)
My DAQ:  Is there any need to purchase a generator bigger than the 50 amps that my plug is rated to pull.  Wouldn't that just be a waste to go bigger than a 6000 watt generator if all I can pull is the 50 amps.
Any ideas on putting on another plug, Should I go with a 100 amp plug and then make step down pigtails for it. ( I havn't seen a generator with a 100 amp socket)

Let's say I bought a 10kw generator (83 amps using 120 volts), and I want to pull out 64 amps, how do I accomplish this with my current set up.  Is there a way to take that one heavy cord and split it into  two 30 amp plugs?

I hope I am not rambling.

That is exactly what you need. Your most likely not going to have everything running full blast at one time so there is no need to change your box, four lead wire (10-4) or go any bigger than a fifty amp plug.

In fact I have never heard of anything bigger than a fifty amp plug, except for the four pin system which cost about $400.00.

However what you may need to do is add additional outlets so you can put big users (if you can) on separate breakers. Cooling systems freezers, reach-ins microwaves, etc use a ton when the first kick in, but then use less power after they are running for awhile.

If your pulling or trying to pull more than 50 or 60 amps into your rig, the 1st thing that will fail is the plug on your power in line. I have to replace one about every 6 months, but always in the summer so I buy 2 or 3 and keep them on hand so when I have a failure I just change it.

You can only pull from a generator what it can produce. Generators usually come with a 220 amp outlet and a couple 110 outlets. You may be able to find someone to rewire the outlets so that you can have 2 - 30 amp outlets but that would only work if you were running a 60 amp generator. Also you don't want to run a generator at max all the time you'll use twice as much gas and wear it out very quickly. Have you done the math on your demand yet?

Dr. BBQ Thanks for the prescription.  I have added stuff up and during the day I am right at 42.5 amps and at night I jump up to around 58 amps.  I have not yet changed my inside lights to LED and I have a marquee on the top of the trailer, and it is about 8 amps alone.  I did want to leave some room for spikes and underestimates.  I think I sometimes overthink everything.  I will just go rent a 6000 one weekend and see if it is enough and if not then maybe an 8000 or 10000 and so on.

One more question.  That 50 amp plug on the end of the line is not going to plug directy into any generator that I have seen.  And every generator seems to have different recepticals.  I guess, I will have a few adapaters until I get this all figured out.

You are right about the outlets on generators and I don't know the answer to your question, but I do know the reason you need a 4 wire 10 gauge line is for your ground. So I would think you could go with some sort of pigtail from your generator to the 10-4 wire to your trailer. Here is what I would do....call a generator manufacture and ask them. In fact I'd call a couple of them and double check to make sure your getting the correct answer. And if a half dozen people on this forum said "oh no problem it'll work" I'd still call a big brand generator company and double check. Research is always the best advance problem sovler in the world. That's my prescription....LOL
        Good Luck
PS and let us know what they think you should do.
