Another Hot Dog U Grad in the news

CSD told me about this place on Sunday. Today the story is front & center in the online Milwaukee paper.  Another proud graduate of Hot Dog University.

The difference between a $30 million yacht and a $3 hot dog isn't a big deal.

At least that's what David Ross, former president of Burger Boat Co., hopes in his new career as a hot dog restaurant owner in Manitowoc.

Saturday, Ross plans to open Dr. Dawg - the first of what could be a chain of Chicago-style hot dog eateries.

It's the latest venture for the entrepreneur widely credited for salvaging Burger Boat from bankruptcy and creating hundreds of jobs at the company's Manitowoc shipyard.

...

A Chicago native, Ross is passionate about hot dogs sold on the city's streets.

"I found that I became particularly aware of every nuance and detail that separated the good from the really great stands. I have my favorite places that I go to every time I visit Chicago. I will hit one, two or three of them depending on how long I stay."

His test marketing in Manitowoc, and a course in hot dog business management, led Ross to create Dr. Dawg.

The dog wagon had developed a cult-like following, with regular customers called the "Dawg Squad."

I found it amusing that he previously worked for Burger Boat, which despite the name is actually a shipbuilder and not a restaurant.

Manitowoc's an interesting choice for a test market.

    Brad,

Dr. Dawg is located in a very competitive area, just about every fast food franchise imaginable is there.  So is our beloved Penguin Drive-in.  Something has got to give.  They can't all be winners in that smallish city.

David Ross is a March 09' grad of Hot Dog University. Tomorrow will be at the grand opening of Dr. Dawg and we'll be there to join in the festivities and wish him the best. His signature sausage is a jumbo Polish prepared on a flat grill with grilled onions. His menu features fresh cut fries, with some Chicago and Milwaukee favorites...Green River, Orange Crush, and Sprecher's Root Beer. Tomorrow will be "Two for the price of one day."

    Split or whole?

I have to make a trip to Green Bay in the next couple of weeks and I'll be in Appleton at the end of January.  If I'm in no hurry and the weather cooperates a diversion to the east could be possible.

    Brad,

It's a 2.5/1-12inch skinless Polish that's angle cut in half and flat grilled, just like the original Fluky's. I ate one last Thursday with grilled onions and mustard. It was "fabulous!" Dr. Dawg is located just east of HWY 43 off HWY 151 on the left.

My first mistake upon stopping at Dr. Dawg tonight was telling the Doc that Prof. Reitman sent me.  Hearing that, Dr. Dawg wouldn't serve me until I signed the papers to open a franchise.

The place was jumping.  There was a short line but service was fast, so fast that I didn't get a chance to examine the menu.  I played it safe and ordered a Chicago with a Handful and a small Green River soda.

Here's another picture of the CSD out of the box.  Vienna Beef perfection.

I reviewed the menu as I ate my meal.  Next time I'll try a veggie tamale and chili cheese fries.  But that will be at my own franchise.

It's my favorite pop. A regional, Chicago drink that I've been drinking for years. To be exact, over 55 years. I used to sell it in my dad's drug store as a fountain drink in a cone shaped, paper cup. It was a concentrate back then, that was mixed with soda water.

Nice photos JRP!  Interesting that Dr. Dawg serves his dogs packed with the fries in a box, ala Superdawg here in Chicago.  Good looking grub!

Nice looking web site and I look forward to visiting and trying that duck sausage.

    John,

Be careful what you wish for. Last month I trained some students from Barnegat, who plan to open a stand and serve Chicago style and Italian hot dogs. I'll keep you posted.

At the end of last month I stopped in at Dr. Dawg for a late lunch/early dinner and was impressed not only with the quality of the food but also the people working there.  It looked like they were all in their teens and maybe early twenties but they were friendly and courteous and filled my order quickly and accurately.

I was a little surprised that the background music was late '50s/early '60s oldies although I was there about the time Early Birds eat (4:15pm or so) so maybe the format changes later.
