    Hi Steve,
Very interesting article and reader comments...thanks for sharing!

Oh well, at least the new place will honor Katz's by having "pastrami PANINI" ! (ugh!)

It's understandable why they are closing, as the owner just died in May, and the wife has been recovering from cancer. And of course, all too often, the children don't want to take over , as these deli's are hard work!

The new, trendy place has "curb appeal", since nearby residents are putting remarks in their "houses for sale" ads that they are "near Postino's"

Of course, it's still always sad to see yet another Jewish style deli close.

Shame to hear about Katz's closing. I'm afraid that deli's are a dying breed no matter who tries to run them anymore. My dad looks forward to being taken to a deli for a traditional pastrami sandwich once a month. Prices are now approaching $14 for a simple pastrami on rye with a pickle spear and a buck and a half more for extra lean. It's hard to justify dropping over 35 dollars with tip for two sandwiches and two soft drinks. The clientele and most of the staff are for the most part over 65 years of age. Unfortunately, there's little room to cut prices, quality, or portions within the traditional expectations of a deli. The operational model of the old style deli is no longer sustainable in today's economy

Pumpernick's Deli near me only charges less that $10 for an "overstuffed" pastrami sandwich. It's not the thicker hand sliced version one finds at Katz's in NY but it's good for this area.

This deli is owned by an experienced deli operator and his intent is to turn it over to his sons.
