Another list

Everytime a newspaper or magazine has space to fill, someone says,"Let's do a list off.....". Here is one I have not seem, perhaps because nobody cares, but here is Todd's best list. It is based on nothing except my perception that a product was the best in it's class, at a time in history, and will be remembered. The Waring Blender Model T Ford The III and M series Leica cameras The Nikon F camera The B3 Organ AK-47 M1 Springfield T-34 tank BE 22B backhoe NW 80D power shovel Original Ford Tarus The McD 15 cent burger The Holmes wrecker The Fender Stratocaster The original Euclid off road dumptruck The P51 Mustang The Walkman The Microsoft operating system The IPod What would you add (or delete)?

LOL, the M1 Garand, made in Springfield, is what I was talking about. I am no firearm expert, but much as the 1903 was loved in the Corps, I have been told by people who DO know (or think that they do) that the 1903 was great only because of those who used it. If a bolt action military rifle were to be on this list, it would be, I expect, one of the European rifles that the 1903 was based on. Your quick catch of an obvious mistake shows how badly I need a proofreader!

I really didn't mean to sound like a smart-ass!! I toted an M1 around at various times in my early 60's Army service. I dumped it quickly for an M2 Carbine and soon learned that it wasn't as good as it looked for S E Asia. My final selection was an old trench shotgun...Even I could use it fairly effectively. But thats another story!! My list of interesting items of historic significance- Elvis Albums 8 track tapes Spam The Lockeheed Constellation The Super Chief (Santa Fe Railway) The Golden State Limited (Southern Pacific Railroad) The City of Las Vegas (Union Pacific Railroad) Greyhound Scenicruisers Continental Trailways American Eagle Buses Pop-top soda and beer can tabs church keys Near-Beer Studebakers 'Deuce-and-a-halfs' open reel tape recorders the Boeing 707 Howdy Doody American Bandstand The Grapes of Wrath "Life in These United States" Air-Poppers (Popcorn) Pat Boone SHirts Streetcars the P61 Black Widow Inchon Imus maybe more will follow-

I should have also listed the Itek printing press and the paper (brand?) litho plates that made the quick print industry possible. Speaking of copies, I considered but did not list the first popular Xerox (tm) machine (the 640??). The 8N Ford tractor.

tmiles, interesting concept, if I get your drift. I'm trying to think of some you don't have (and I love the Leicas). Maybe from an earlier era, Speed Graphic/Graflex cameras (my Grandfather was a press photog way back and I have one of each from him). One I'd tend to disagree with is Microsoft Operating System. Was it the standard? Yes! Was it the best? Never! How 'bout Macintosh stereo amps, especially the old tube jobs?

I see a lot of aircraft & armor mentioned on this page, alas no mention of the Bf-109 (aircraft) or the Panzerkampfwagen V (Panther) tank. What gives here? The Fw-190 is also obviously missing, just to make a point.

Is the lister referring to DOS or Windows? If DOS it did start the personal computer on its way. If Windows, forget it. The Macintosh OS is what started the graphics OS on personal computers learned from Xerox (but never commercialized by Xerox). Windows is just a copy followup of Mac OS. One of the biggest? The Internet. That's how all we diverse people are making these lists.

And Davydd, I sometimes ponder the evolution of online message board communities. I have one message-board group that I consider to be among my best friends. My teenage son participates in a sports-related message board (on which I lurk) that makes me laugh out loud every day at the humor the regulars come up with. I have often wondered who came up with the concept of message boards (please don't tell me Al Gore!) and what was the very FIRST message board and is it still in existence?

I have often wondered who came up with the concept of message boards (please don't tell me Al Gore!) and what was the very FIRST message board and is it still in existence? The internet began with ARPANET in 1969, a network under military, defense contractors and university doing defense contract work. Out of that came USENET in the late 70s serving the university community and later commercial ventures. There were other networks but for the general public Compuserve (actually created in 1969) in the early 80s might have been one of the earliest message boards accessible from home via dialup modem. Of course the idea of the personal computer did not come along until Bill Gates and IBM collaborated with DOS and a few others in the late 70s including Apple. I was on Compuserve and another competitor GEnie in 1984 at 512 baud and thought I was cookin' with speed. I also connected to many local dial-up bulletin boards. It was expensive back then. Charges were around 15 cents per minute online as I remember. In 1987 Steve Case's Quantum Computing Services teamed up with Apple to create Applelink Personal Edition for Apple II and Mac. Case started his online ventures in 1983 with Commodore computers. By 1989 APE morphed into AOL to embrace Windows computers. During the 80s there were other private dialup networks such as Prodigy. For us masses it was pretty much a dialup world until the Internet loosend in the early 90s to general public access. Usenet message groups were big then. My internet provider had over 30,000 to choose from on any subject. Yahoo Groups are kind of the equivalent today. Real explosion came with the advent of the HTML browsers about 1994. By 1996 I saw the handwriting on the wall with private networks like Compuserve and AOL. The world wide web was the future. Message boarding on the internet was clunky at first but now is rather sophisticated with several choices.

Wow, David, impressive! I once had a summer job at IBM and the "Human Factors" department had me (and others) come in to test a new product -- observing with clipboards and stopwatches to see how it worked for actual users. The project had some kind of code name. Turned out that it was the first IBM personal computer.
