Another recall: Turtle Pies

from: http://wcbstv.com/topstories/topstories_story_240094720.html

American Pie, LLC is recalling 1,440 cases of Marie Callender Turtle Pies because of elevated amounts of bacteria.

The recalled pies have a UPC code of 12781 10280 and a production code ending in 143. Only pies with production codes ending in 143 on the package are included in the recall.

The pies were sold in Kroger, Giant Eagle and Hy-Vee supermarkets in 16 states: Virginia, Ohio, Texas, West Virginia, Georgia, Tennessee, Kentucky, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Illinois, Kansas, Minnesota, Maryland, Nebraska, Iowa and South Dakota.

None of the bacteria are pathogens, but the company warns that eating the pies could lead to gastrointestinal illness, nausea, or vomiting. No illnesses have been reported.

What's a turtle pie? Is it the turtle candy, or is it turtle meat?

It's like the candy. I think it was a cheesecake, but may have been a cream pie. It's not on the website as of now.

The manufacturing company involved is American Pie LLC (located in Syosset, NY.) and the website is http://www.mariespies.com/category.php though as KOK says, the turtle pie is no longer shown on the website.

I like that thought: "Marie Callender's Turtle-Meat Pie." Cooter pie.

    I'd try one.

It was a cheesecake sort of filling with Carmel, Chocolate and Pecans spread around on top (and thru the filling I think). Funny though...The Kroger Warehouse in Louisville delivers to stores in affected area, but Indiana and Ohio were not included on the list. Odd??

If it's as bad as their frozen dinners it's not a problem here.

Thanks for the serious as well as humorous answers, ya wise guys. I don't think I'd like either one. I loathe caramel and turtle meat just doesn't sound like something you'd actually eat.

I just wasn't sure if turtle pie was some southern concoction that we ignorant westerners knew nothing about.

    Katie

I first saw Turtle Pie at Marie Callendar's In SoCal. Check the menu next time you visit one of those "Western" stores. I don't know if the same kitchen prepares the grocery-store version of their pies?? We got a frozen "Razzleberry Pie" last week at WalMart here in Indiana. It is one of the two or three flavors they stock on a regular basis from Marie Callendar.

Actually, turtle soup is pretty good - like clam chowder, but the shells are kinda hard to digest.

    Ask and you shall recieve

    CajunKing's Turtle Sheppards Pie

4 pounds of turtle meat. (Snapping turtles make the best stew).
    1 cup shortening.
    1 cup flour
    5 medium sized onions, chopped.
    2 bell peppers, chopped
    2 ribs celery, chopped
    4 cloves garlic, chopped
    2 small cans tomato sauce
1 small can tomato paste, or Rotel
    2 japaleño peppers, chopped (optional)
    Salt and pepper to taste.

The turtle meat should be cut into small pieces, seasoned with salt and pepper and sauteed in a black iron pot until brown, then taken out.

The flour is added to the fat still in the pot to make a roux.

This is stirred until the flour is brown.

To this brown roux add the chopped onions, bell peppers, celery and garlic.

When this mixture is wilted, add the tomato sauce and Rotel, and a little water if needed.

This is simmered for about an hour and a half before you put the meat back in.

Cook until the meat is tender.

If you like your stew spicy, add a jalapeño pepper or two and some Louisiana hot sauce.

Place stew in a deep round baking dish.

    Cover with garlic mashed potatoes.

Bake in a 325 degree oven for 35 minutes or until potatoes are lightly browned.

Should serve 6 or 4 hungry Cajuns

Katie, I hope you enjoy it.
