Anthony Bourdain ? Fri, 08/21/09 7:55 PM (permalink)
Greetings, Roadfooders!

Did you ever watch the TV-Shows, this "Chef" did years ago...?

I did like his show very much, Cambodia/Vietnam,  was very touching in some scenes, even the "Master" was near to tears, very often...

Anthony Bourdain:

He is still making new shows on the travel network.  I used to like them very much but they seem to have lost their edge over the years.

He was once a master of the french bistro.  He's been out of the kitchen however for a very long time now.

I enjoy him, he's a clever wit and dry sarcasim, but the show is just getting old.

His cookbook is the only cookbook I have and that I've ever run across that drops the F-Bomb in the middle of the recipe.  I give him credit for that.

Those earliest shows were produced for the cable TV network The Food Network:
        http://www.foodnetwork.com/

        Wikipedia entry on those shows:
        http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Cook's_Tour_(television)
Thatlink is not working because this message board software is chopping of the last close parenthesis. This is what the URL look like without the http://:
        en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A Cook's Tour (television)

I saw some some of those episodes, but forgot the details.

We have several threads on this forum with comments about The Food Network. Many cooking shows are now shown on another cable TV network called The Travel Channel:

The constant repetition of the older shows...I think the Japan, Korea, and Namabia episodes have aired a dozen times this summer, is wearing down the fans of "No Reservations". While I like the shows set in cities in the USA, they are no-where near as comprehensive as the international shows. The USA based shows tend to be a series of restaurant reviews with less social and cultural commentary.

I appreciate that when he travels, he eats at "Roadfood-type" places and not at the usual tourist haunts. His willingness to respect local delicacies and customs makes him a good representative of the American tourist. Anyone that enjoys both foie gras and hot dogs is my kind of food critic.

I loved Kitchen Confidential and couldn't put it down. I do find it amusing though that in the book he trashes the current celebrity chef culture and well...

I identify with Tony Bourdain in that not all American tourists are there to see just the local tourist attractions. I have traveled a lot and have tried things that even Tony wouldn't try. Whale blubber anyone? How about Salmon eyeballs?

I love the fact that he loves meat in "tubular form" in any culture. Makes our American hot dog seem almost tame by comparison.

For those of us in the restaurant industry, "Kitchen Confidential" is old hat as we have been privy to this information for years and still practice it today.  It's just how it is! Who's going to throw out a $45.00 piece of meat just because it landed on the floor for 3 seconds? If you cook it then it will kill the germs anyway!!

I still watch his show on the Travel Network and still think it is relevant regardless of where he is at. New Jersey and Ohio were a few of the shows in the U.S that stick out in my mind. HOJO's on the Jersy shore was one of the most poingient because it is still there but not what he remembers when he was a kid, (what ever is?)

                      David O.

p.s. Anthony Bourdain was a CHEF at "Les Halles" for 15 years in NYC before he became a writer.

I find his willingness to eat ANYTHING quite amazing. I enjoy the fact that he goes into things with an open mind and a positive approach, although it still doesn't make me want to do it myself!

That and his snarky "TGI McFunster" sense of humor make him my favorite.

I saw the blurbs for it, which included Zimmern mostly naked, poncing about in orange body paint. I'll be having nightmares for weeks to come.

Chews with his mouth open, makes disgusting smacking noises when he eats, makes orgasmic moaning sounds when eating certain items, always states how he's "starving" when his girth says otherwise. Doesn't know when to STFU.

                                          I could go on.

That stands for Shut The F Up.

Please don't ask me to spell out the rest of F, as this is supposed to be a family friendly site.

They play records with that phrase between midnight and 5 AM on some German radio stations.

Search for the phrase in enginecapt's post on Youtube.
