A restaurant during the 60's where part of the dining area was set up in an old airplane fuselage? I was little then and have no memory of the name.

I was a teen in the 60's and do remember someone did that with an old Constellation. No wings. I gotta ask my cousin, he remembers everything. We both grew up on the NW side. Will get back with yah.

Well between my cousin and I all we can remember was that it was on Cicero Avenue, south of Madison, on the way to Midway Airport. We both remember driving past it on the way to the airport. Maybe called the "Hanger" or something like that.

This is going to drive me nuts --- Gotta make some phone calls!

I don't know the name, but I know I remember seeing it in the July 1976 National Geographic. I don't have it anymore, but I know it's in there.

The 94th Aero Squadron and the Hanger Restaurant are in Wheeling on Milwaukee Avenue. The airplane restaurant was on south Cicero Avenue. I never ate at the place, but passed it many times.

Still researching. The place was just South of Lake Street. I have Emails out to a lot of people and will keep you all posted. I will be back in Chi Town next week and maybe can get some info while there.

I do remember an "airplane" lounge in a hotel on Mannheim Rd near O'Hare called something like Flight 190 or Runway 190. I remember going there once and hearing some one man band sing the Manilow classic "Her name was Lola...She was a showgirl..." We were in hysterics with laughter...it was one of those nights where nothing went as planned and we ended up in that sad place after driving all over the city.

Jinjo - According to my cousin it was not a Connie, maybe a DC6 or 7. Nice pic though!

While back in Chicago and Michigan last week I stumbled into a pile of old National Geographic magazines at a Antique Shop and found the July 76 copy. There was a picture, I think it was very similar to the one posted here, but the restaurant was in Florida, not Illinois.

As for asking around, I did a lot of that, and nobody could recollect the name of the place although remember seeing it years ago. Still have some of the family checking around and we'll see what comes up.

I don't recall the full name, but it was something like "Sky High Drive In". It was a hot dog/fast food-type place on the far west side of Chicago, on Cicero Avenue near Monroe. . You could eat in your car or inside the plane, which I think was an old Convair. It opened in the early 60s, lasted through about 1966 and disappeared in early 1967. It was in a somewhat out of the way location and the neighborhood was declining rapidly at the time it closed.

Sorry, folks - the 1960's is before my time.

I remember passing the place many times, but never stopped to eat.
