No matter what anyone else says, there is only one real Big Boy and that's the original from Bob's. All else are imitations even if they did get the OK from Bob's to make them.

Big Boys was the place to go when I was stationed in Arkansas, back in NJ they were called Shoneys Big Boy, then just Shoneys a late night favorite especially for the local emergency service crews. Here in jacksonville, fl the Shoneys haven't done so well..

They've been known as Bob's, Frisch's, Shoney's, Elbe's and I'm sure some other names in different areas of the country. We have Frisch's around here, but they stopped being a viable choice a long time ago. Marginal food, indifferent service and questionable attention to actual cleaning of the restaurant seem to have been the culprits.

The best Big Boy restaurant to go to is the Bob's Big Boy in Burbank, CA. It is the oldest existing Big Boy, built in 1949. They have a different menu than the other Big Boy's and the food is better(ok, not great, but better). They have a "cruise night" on Fridays with custom cars and car-hop service. If you stop in for breakfast some weekend, you might see Drew Carrey eating at the counter. They are kitty-corner from another classic place: Pappoo's the Hot Dog Show!

Doing a search of this web site for the term "Big Boy" results in 70 threads dealing with the topic. I would bet a number of them offer contributors opinions. I guess writing was more popular than reading in a lot of schools that I didn't attend.

In Knoxville, TN, Shoney's Big Boy consistently gets the vote for the best breakfast buffet. My family enjoys it each Sunday after church.

I remember the first Big Boy I ever saw. It was a Bob's Big Boy at Castaic Junction in California, and it was back in 1956. Oh, and it was really good.

My next contact was a Shoney's Big Boy in Charleston, West Virginia in 1965. They had one burger that was really good -- a Shoneyburger. Unfortunately, as the owner, Alex Schoenbaum, expanded his business, the good food ended, and the Shoneyburger became a shadow of itself.

In the 1950's, 1960's, 1970's and the very early 1980's I was a Huge Big Boy fan, but then the quality of food dropped very quickly! In fact in the last 9 years, 5 Big Boy's closed here, in extreme Southwest Michigan, 1 in Niles, 1 in Three Rivers, 1 in Sturgis and 2 in Benton Harbor.

My family family and myself also enjoyed the delighful breakfast bar at Shoney's, during the 1980's and 1990's there were alot of Shoney's in Michigan and Indiana, but for some reason, they all closed.

Just a note, Shoney's and Big Boys were competitors here in Michigan. They were owned by seperate companies.

We have Shoney's with a breakfast bar here. I know people who like it a lot, but I have to say I prefer the IHOP rooty-tooty breakfast to the Shoney buffet. Every time I've tried Shoney's, the bacon has been limp and greasy, the biscuits have been hard, and the gravy tastes like it came from a can. But that's just one persons' opinion.

SkylarOne: You are correct. The main reason my family chose Big Boy buffet is that the grandkids which are 2 and 4 sort of prefer this type of meal. If you have kids or grandkids, I am sure you know what I mean. Shoney's sort of caters to the kids anyway.

Sundancer, I know exactly what you're saying. Our grandbabies are age 4 and 11. I've eaten at the Ryan's buffet after church more times than I can count so they can get mac and cheese and the ice cream, lol.

And as for the breakfast buffet - not all Shoney's are created equal. I know some of them in other areas are decent, but the two that are close to us can't keep good help, and they are pretty bad.

I enjoy the Swiss Miss Hamburger Sandwich at Big Boy, served with Tartar Sauce and lettuce, along with fries or the salad bar. Their Senior breakfasts ordered from the menu are very good and very reasonable Mon.-Friday.

Yea kids like the Breakfast buffet, me personaly I do not care for it. I like good hot fresh food. Some big boys up here let the food set out on the buffet too long.

I know i'm going to get horse-whipped for this, but an Elby's Big Boy hamburger was my favorite. All the Elby's closed where I live though. (probably a reason for that)

LOVED Big Boy (esp the namesake burger) as a kid at "Eat N' Park" restaurants in Pittsburgh area way back when they were a Big Boy chain...they even had carhop service when I was a kid.

Closest thing we have here to Big Boys are Shoney's, which are generally putrid. The breakfast buffet is probably the best thing they offer, and that's not saying much. Big sign near me on interstate for Shoney's advertises "Unforgettable Buffets", but I swear that the first time I saw it, it read "Unforgiveable Buffets"...

We had several Bob's Big Boys in Fresno while I was growing up. Used to really like them, especially the Big Boy hamburger with fries.

I found a Frisch's Big Boy in Cincy 3 years ago and ate there one night. It was OK but being in a new town there were so many other good places to try.

The Big Boy sandwich is the first double-decker hamburger (a true classic). Bob (Bob's Big Boy) Wian, Big Boy's late founder, franchised Big Boy to Dave (Frisch's Big Boy) Frisch around 1949. Wian sold the chain to Marriott (Marriott Hotels) in 1967. Elias Brothers acquired Big Boy from Marriott in 1987 and ruined everything. Elias Bros. went bankrupt in 2000. I think Frisch's took-over those remaining locations??? A few Bob's Big Boys still exist in Southern California.

Bob's in Burbank is great on car night. If there, go across the street to Mo's. That's where you'll have a great hamburger! The have a salad called the Bombey with a spicy peanut based dressing that I'd like right now!

Bob's chocolate shakes are okay. Their breakfast buffet used to be good when travelling.

I would rather have fast food from a drive thru. it is cooked the same way and it cost less besides you dont have to deal with some crazy middle aged lady that has worked there so long she thinks the food is still made from scratch.
